"We are a local small veterinary business and had been needing some roof and gutter repairs done for quite some time, however, we did not have a lot of 'extra' to spend. Cedric was professional and amiable from the start. He was very clear with what he could provide up front and all estimates were provided and adhered to. There were never any extras that were 'forgotten' or tacked on. The work was scheduled and done in a very timely manner and DEFINITELY seems to have fixed some major issues we were having. Cedric was also very gracious and conscientious about returning to complete work that could not be completed originally or that was discovered after or created by the original work done. I have no reason to believe that the repairs will hold for the foreseeable future. We plan to use Roberts Flooring and More for future work that has already been discussed, and I will definitely refer Cedric and his work to family and friends who ask about great work at a reasonable price. Thank you Cedric! You made my job so much easier!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Pressure-treated decks last 15 to 20 years on average, but with proper maintenance, you could get 40 to 50 years of value from yours. Reseal your deck every one to two years, and replace old or rotted wood as soon as possible to avoid structural damage. Where you live plays a role in the lifespan of your deck. Intense sunlight, rainfall, wind, and hail can reduce the deck’s lifespan.

It is recommended to clean your deck once or twice a year to prevent the accumulation of dirt, debris, mold, and mildew. The ideal times for cleaning are in the spring and fall. A spring cleaning removes grime that has built up over the winter, preparing your deck for summer use. A fall cleaning washes away messes from summer activities, preventing them from setting into the wood over the winter. The exact frequency can depend on factors such as how often the deck is used, its exposure to pollen, and whether salt was used on it during the winter. Regular cleaning helps protect the wood and its finish from damage.

PVC decking might be long-lasting, but this synthetic material lacks the natural aesthetic or sustainability of wood decking. If you want to match your decking to your new garden furniture or just freshen up the faded surface, it’s not usually possible to paint PVC decking. When comparing PVC to composite decking, PVC is pricier and more prone to warping in hot regions.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.
