"Luke came and did a scope of our property, measurements, and gave us different options for a fence. We weren't ready at that very moment so he sent updated quotes weekly to keep us posted on the fluctuations in price. Finally we were ready and Luke fit us right in and moved us up when there was a cancellation. Unfortunately we were not aware that our house was built on a very hard mineral stone making the job a whole lot harder than the norm. But Luke did not give up! He kept us posted on his progress and any delays we would come up against. The finished product, as challenging as it was to complete, was BEAUTIFUL!! Our fence is made with quality wood and is amazing. I would definitely re-hire & refer R&L for future projects! Thanks so much for a beautiful fence!"

While there’s no hard evidence to support this idea, driveway gates at least provide an additional obstacle that may deter crime. After all, a would-be burglar or trespasser would have to break into the gate and the property itself. The extra work could encourage them to move onto a house without a driveway gate.

A security door costs an average of $1,400, but costs can range from $600 for a simple screen or steel door to more than $4,600 for a wrought-iron security door. Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
