Cutting Grass For College Hi there, I'm a single father trying to further my education, so I may provide a better life for my son. College isn't cheap, and neither are children. . Cutting grass to pay my tuition wasn't the original plan. But after my wife passed, I needed to find something I could do on the side to help support the life style I want my little boy to have. Although cutting grass probably isn't the most profitable thing I could do. It allows me to have a flexible schedule to accommodate for school, my other job, and my son. Maybe one day, I might be able to start my own company. Maybe I'll make enough money, so my child never has to struggle like most people nowadays. Until then, a good tip definitely wouldn't hurt... haha.

Lawns questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can DIY either core or liquid aeration for your lawn. You can use a manual core aerator or rent an automatic one. Just be sure to mark off yard obstacles like sprinkler heads before you start. Liquid aeration is easier—just hook up a garden pump sprayer, although some are able to be attached to a hose. While liquid aeration is not as laborious as core aeration, you will need to focus on an even distribution of the solution across your entire lawn for it to be effective. Of course, if you are unsure about doing both, call a pro.

Technically, yes—and you may have some successful growth—but this isn’t the ideal way to fill in sparse areas. By clearing leaves and debris, amending the soil, and aerating it properly before you lay the seeds, you’re providing the most ideal conditions for them to germinate.

Whether or not grass will fill in bare spots itself depends on the type of grass you have. For example, grass with rhizomes (e.g., Bermuda grass) and stolons (e.g., Saint Augustine grass) will naturally fill in bald spots as it spreads laterally. However, clump-forming grasses will not spread.

The frequency of lawn aeration depends on factors such as soil type, yard traffic, and lawn health. In most cases, annual aeration is sufficient to maintain a healthy lawn. However, if your lawn experiences heavy use or soil compaction issues, you may consider aerating twice a year. Keep an eye on your grass and soil conditions to determine when aeration is needed to keep your lawn in its best shape.

If maintained correctly, natural grass should last between five and 15 years, or up to several decades, depending on your home’s climate conditions. You can extend your grass’ lifespan by treating it well, including regular mowing, weeding, watering, and preventative pest control. Consider hiring a local lawn care service to provide everything your grass needs to live a long, healthy life.
