Grass Gator is a locally own lawn care business here in Savannah, Ga. The company is located on Wilmington Island. Which is in Chatham County to the south east part of Savannah. At this time we are a one man operation company. When the company starts to grow it will be able to add additional employees. We will be focusing on the following markets: Wilmington Island, Isle of Hope, Tybee Island and the Landings of Savannah. In each of the communities listed the income is middle to high end. Our overhead will be cheaper to operate the business because we live on Wilmington Island. This will give us the edge over our competition and we can keep our price very competitive. We will base the whole company’s foundation on customer service. We will give great customer service on each visit to each property. We will go the extra mile for each customer. We will be very detailed oriented and we will not charge extra for the small stuff.

"This guy had me wait around all day twice just to get an estimate, and both times were no call/no show. Finally he just started ignoring my texts/calls"

Leaf Removal questions, answered by experts

While you can leave roots in the ground, if you don’t want the shrub to regrow again over time, it’s best not to leave any roots behind. Ensure you remove as much of the shrub as possible, including the root ball and any main roots you can see, to prevent new growth. Some gardeners opt for using a chemical treatment to prevent the stump from growing back, but this can kill beneficial microorganisms living in your soil.

If you’re wondering whether you can plant a tree where the stump was removed, know that the soil conditions won’t be ideal, so you should avoid it. The soil beneath the previous tree will likely be depleted of nutrients, plus there may be roots left behind that will seriously hinder the growth of a new tree. Also, if you use salt or other chemical solutions to kill the stump, these can linger in the soil for months or even years and prevent healthy growth. It’s best to choose a different spot that’s at least three feet away for a new tree, or wait at least a year and thoroughly amend the soil before you plant.

If you have a strong back and a lot of patience, you can dig out a tree stump. You'll need to use a pointed shovel to dig out the soil around the stump, cutting away roots with a pair of clippers as you go. You’ve removed enough soil when you can access the taproot at the bottom of the root ball. After you cut that major artery with a saw or loppers, you should be able to roll the stump over and haul it away.

Yes, stump removal is worth the investment. It costs an average of $400 to remove a stump, but you will likely avoid other more expensive issues, such as termite and carpenter ant infestations, which can cost upward of $1,500 to treat professionally. If termites or ants attack the rotting stump—and they likely will—they could move to your primary structure after the stump is consumed. So, you could incur structural damage to your home as a result, which is even more costly and potentially dangerous.

There are a few things you should look for in a stump removal company to make sure you’ll be satisfied with the results:

  • Proper business licensing and insurance

  • History of positive reviews

  • Good rating with the Better Business Bureau

We also recommend asking any company you’re considering the following questions to help find the best value:

  • Will you remove the roots as well as the stump?

  • Will you haul away wood chips or large portions of the stump?

  • What method will you use to remove the stump?
