"I did quite a bit of research before hiring. Was refered to Phipps Masonry & Stucco for a masonry project and was delightfully surprised by the estimate. "Thomas and Like arrived on time and met with me to verify the scope of work. I showed them one additional item that I would like to be completed and they were able to do that. They met with me a couple of times during the project to show me what had been done and what limitations they were looking at based on the condition of the concrete. They completed the work and showed me what they had accomplished. I was extremely satisfied with their work. Great team and good representatives of LRE Ground Services/Foundation Repair."

If you want to make your home eco-friendly, enjoy low maintenance, and love the fact that its looks will take people’s breath away (and not because they were trying to blow your house down), then a modern brick home is right for you. You can hire a mason to get the building process started for your brick home.

But if you’re not fond of the color and don’t want to deal with the process of repointing or other repairs, consider going with vinyl or wood. These materials offer a lower cost. While they tend to require more maintenance, they don’t cost nearly the same as exterior brick house repair.

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

Stone can last anywhere from 15 to 100 years before it needs to be restored. You should clean your stone flooring or countertops regularly using cleaners designed for stone surfaces. Stay on top of vacuuming to prevent scratches from deteriorating stone faster, deep clean your stone surfaces using a pH-neutral cleaning solution at least once a year, and reseal the stone every one to five years, depending on foot traffic or usage.
