"If I could give a lower rating I wood (pun intended). We had Elysium install wood floors in our newly constructed home. Almost immediately, they started cupping and within 6 months several of the boards were cracking and the wood floors both upstairs and downstairs were cupped. Earlier this year, Elysium came to the house and said they would repair and replace the floors if necessary - basically stand behind their work. They repeated this about a month ago saying they would order wood for the downstairs floors and resand the upstairs floors. Today - one week before they were supposed to start the repair, they stated it was not their fault and we would have to take care of fixing the floors. Find another contractor that stands behind their work. Update 08/21/2023 If I could give a lower rating I wood (pun intended). We had Elysium install wood floors in our newly constructed home. Almost immediately, the floors started cupping and within 6 months several of the boards were cracking and the wood floors both upstairs and downstairs were cupped. Earlier this year, Elysium came to the house and said they would repair and replace the floors if necessary - basically stand behind their work. February 28, 2023 quote from Elysium -"We of course will take care of your flooring concerns, that is not a question. I would be glad to come out on Tuesday and see myself as well as meet with you and the other company to determine cause and solutions to get the flooring concerns taken care of." On 4/19/2023 - we received this from Elysium - "I am working on the schedule with the installers, two companies have given us the same findings. I’ve already contacted Reserve a few weeks ago, and the flooring is still available as well." I received this in an email from them today 5/28/2023 - “Rick, I have gone ahead and put a pause on the wood flooring order for now, as we strongly feel are not responsible for the concerns you have regarding your flooring”. As you can see from their own words, they believe the customer is at fault for Elysiums work. Elysium did not visit our home between 4/19 and 5/30, they just decided they weren't going to fix our floors. Find another contractor - I will never work with them again. 8/20/2023 Update Elysium has told us not to call them anymore and only talk with their lawyer. So we are now having to prepare a Breach of Contract lawsuit. Since I posted the original critique, we have had two independent companies review the floor install work. Both assign 100% of the floor problems to installer error and 0% to site or manufacturer error and Elysium still won't take responsibility. Excerpts from the reports are below. Report #1 "We found that the wood flooring was installed without proper spacing from the wall. Most cases it was tight to the wall. We talked to the manufacturer and they said that the hickory flooring leaves the mill at 9% moisture. The wood is currently between 13 and 15%. The plywood below the hickory is 13 to 20%. The concrete is also above normal moisture content. Our conclusions Wood was not acclimated long enough inside the home before installation began. Concrete was not properly sealed. All they used was some black plastic. This is not sufficient and not to manufacturers requirements. Plywood was nailed to concrete instead of glued which would break the waterproofing barrier and is also not to spec. Our opinion is that since the concrete was not sealed and the floor was stained and varnished and the fact that the floor was not acclimated properly the moisture was trapped below the floor. Therefore the plywood and the hickory floor took on moisturizer and expanded. Since the floor was installed tight to the wall it could only go up creating the buckling in the finished floor. One other observance was that the installer did not use enough glue to attach floors. On wide plank solid hardwood you have to apply full cover glue. No bare spots. " Report #2 Conclusions Manufacturing Related Issues Observed: No manufacturing defciencies were observed Site Related Issues Observed: No site-related issues were observed Installation Related Issues Observed: 1) The Plywood subFoor is at a higher moisture level that NWFA recommendations. This can cause cupping in the installed plank. 2) Lack of expansion throughout the installation. From pictures provided by the consumer and contractor as well as measurements taken during the inspection show the recommended expansion was not kept causing the expansion of the floor to develop cupping. 3) Plank measurements show growth on both the first and second floor areas. The first floor grew an additional 1/4 inch most likely due to the moisture levels in the subfloor."

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

Glass is typically held in a cabinet door by a silicone sealant, which will keep it tightly in place. You can substitute silicone sealant for rubber pieces, known as Hafele stops, but this option will place more space between the cabinet materials and the glass. Consult a cabinet maker or repair professional for more insight on the best tools and materials to use.

Standard 2x4 boards and plywood or particle boards are sturdy and cost-effective for making garage shelves, and pressure-treated 2x4s are best for any portion that will contact an unfinished concrete slab in the garage. You can create custom shelving with these materials or use standard sizes for fewer cuts. Plywood and 2x4s are easy to work with and cut with a standard miter saw. The natural wood offers a modern look and will hold up for decades.

You can replace drawers in existing cabinets by repurchasing the same model, if only replacing broken drawers, or replace them altogether to give your kitchen a whole new look. Be sure to measure the exact dimensions of each drawer to ensure the new set will fit correctly. You should also replace existing drawers with new ones with the same type of drawer slides for easy installation.

Careful measurement is crucial—measure multiple times and account for hardware thickness, seasonal wood movement, and clearance requirements. Test-fit components before final assembly, and consider building one drawer as a prototype before cutting materials for multiple units.

Maintaining painted cabinets includes regular cleaning with non-abrasive solutions and avoiding harsh chemicals that may strip paint layers.
