"We hired Walter Price to do a total kitchen remodel in August 2018 due to mold. From the start, we experienced red flags, but decided to push through in order to complete the project in a timely manner. In short, we ended up parting ways with Walter before the completion of the project due to extremely poor workmanship, his use of cheap materials, unprofessionalism and dishonesty. Walter tried to talk us out of pulling permits for the project, even though the law required that we pull one. He was not forthcoming about materials being used, even when we were specifically asking about them. Walter also made several significant changes and decisions without consulting us, including pulling the ceiling down (which was not part of the original plan), the direction of hardwood floors and using materials to cover up mistakes and then trying to charge us for additional materials. Some of those mistakes included that he did not level the floors nor the ceiling during the remodel. When we asked him why they were not leveled, he said because it wasn’t outlined in the contract. Even small things like leveling of knobs or poor paint coverage were met with arguments, lack of accountability or a promise to fix it later. The hardwood floors were not installed professionally and the finish included dirt, hair and pooling of polyurethane. The final straw was when we caught his subcontractor attempting to place loose cellulose insulation from the demo of our kitchen back into our attic. Clearly, during demo, the insulation would have come in contact with the existing mold, dust and other debris. Given our bad experience, we would not recommend Walter Price."

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

Cabinets should last about 20 years. Of course, the total lifespan of your cabinet depends on the wear and tear it’s put through—the more use and handling, the faster it's prone to needing repair. When looking at your cabinets, look for the following to determine if they need to be repaired or replaced:

  • Scratches or dents

  • Water damage

  • Unpleasant smells

  • Outdated cabinetry

  • Continuous dirty or dingy look

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.

While a three-inch center-to-center handle is common, there’s no guarantee that sizing will be the same for every cabinet. Different types of handles have different sized holes to attach them and there are lots of different cabinet handle widths and styles. You should measure to be sure you know the size of a handle and to avoid surprises.

The vinyl finish on thermofoil cabinets makes them durable and scratch-resistant, especially compared to painted cabinets. However, if they do get deep scratches, it can be challenging to fix, and you may be unable to repair them.

Careful measurement is crucial—measure multiple times and account for hardware thickness, seasonal wood movement, and clearance requirements. Test-fit components before final assembly, and consider building one drawer as a prototype before cutting materials for multiple units.
