Customers say: Super punctual

"My husband and I couldn't be more pleased with Kitchen Crafters. We had a complete kitchen remodel done including counters, cabinets, backsplash, flooring, and plumbing. Jim, the owner, was highly involved with every phase of the project and he was always a phone call away when I had questions. His crew were polite, respectful, efficient and extremely meticulous with details. Kitchen Crafters does top quality work and I would recommend them without question. My husband and I LOVE our new kitchen!"

"Mike did an excellent job on our new pool. He was great at communicating with us from the start to finish of the project and was always prompt to reply to any questions that we had. His team was very professional and always cleaned the work site after finishing each day. Large construction projects can have a lot of unexpected hiccups, but Mike did a very good job of estimating the timeline of the project and keeping everything on track despite weather delays or the unexpected. Our pool turned out beautiful and the quality of the project shows. We would recommend Mike and his crew to all of our family and friends and would absolutely work with him again."

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Small repairs or applications can be DIY projects, but removing older textures, especially with safety risks, is usually left to professionals.

It is often less expensive to cover a popcorn ceiling instead of removing it. Installing drywall costs $1.50 to $3 per square foot, whereas popcorn ceiling removal averages $7 per square foot. Another option may be installing beadboard panels over top, giving your ceiling a fresh and modern look.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

Because of the nature of the texture, it's common for the popcorn texture to loosen while painting. Popcorn ceilings are delicate, and using a heavy hand with a roller or applying overly wet paint can loosen the texture. To avoid a mess, handle the material gently with a roller or brush. It's also smart to test a small area first, and if the texture starts coming off, the ceiling may need repairs or sealing before painting.
