Both interior and exterior paint add value to your home, but exterior paint may have a higher ROI when it comes time to sell. Houses with more curb appeal fetch higher prices overall, and a fresh coat of paint can go a long way toward making a great first impression.

Exterior paints contain more volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, making them dangerous when used indoors. Without the free ventilation of the great outdoors, it can take longer for the fumes to dissipate than interior paint. While you may notice the smell lessening more quickly, you should be wary of paint fumes inside for 48 to 72 hours after it dries.

First, make sure that you tape off all the areas that you don’t want to paint black. It’s harder to paint a light color over black than to touch up any lighter spots you missed. Once you’ve taped it off, make sure that the surface is clean and smooth, and then prime the wall with a tinted primer in gray. This step will help to transition from a lighter color to a darker one.

You can sometimes add water to your spray gun, depending on the design of your sprayer and the type of paint, paint finish, or sealant. In many cases, mixing in around 10% percent of water to the paint makes for an easier application process and further evens out the mist. Read the instructions to make sure this is an appropriate step.

The time it takes to prep and paint a room depends wholly on the project's details. You can expect to spend at least two days on the job, including one for prepping and priming and one for applying two coats of paint. If the room is complex with many features to work around, expect to spend an additional day.
