"For my landscape lighting project I wanted to replace all of my malfunctioning solar lights with a low voltage electrical solution. I solicited quotes from 3 contractors for this project. In speaking with Mark from Landscape Illumination, I learned that he had a career in landscaping so he also understood plants and that impressed me. As we walked around the property he made wonderful suggestions of certain areas to feature with lighting as well as installing new electrical lights where some of my solar lights had been. After Mark left, I thought over his presentation and concluded that I would not be able to afford him because of his wealth of knowledge and experience. As it turns out, the 3 quotes were all over the board. The good news is that Mark's quote was the LOWEST so it was easy to make my selection! Mark was good at keeping me informed on the project and was on time the day of installation. Another member of his team was on hand to bury all the cabling. Once the project was completed, you could not even tell that we just installed the lights. Everything was put back the way they found it--pavers, grass and mulch. The best part happened later that night. It was like watching the 4th of July fireworks with all the oohs and ahs as we walked around our yard and saw how Mark transformed it into an evening showplace. We are so pleased with the finished product. Check out the photos below. I have already recommended his services to a friend of mine."

"I am still in the early stages of my project but I could not wait a second longer to brag on the wonderful, Jessica. From the moment we were on our call I was poured into and felt seen, heard & instantly connected to Jessica. Her passion and dedication for her work were quickly apparent and even though we’d only spoken for minutes, it felt like I’d known for years. Her interest and excitement for my project was a breath of fresh air. All of this is new to me and seeking the right help has not been the easiest process, but with Jessica, things felt right. We didn’t need to sleep on it or hold off because she made us feel sure. Despite having a smaller budget, Jessica was adamant about respecting that budget and making sure I was comfortable throughout the process. Her reassurance was comforting and her kindness was unmatched. I feel honored to have such an amazing human help turn our new house into a home. I am happy. I am excited and I am ready. Thank you, Jessica. Let’s do this! <3"

Lighting questions, answered by experts

High-quality landscape lights that are hardwired and properly maintained can last for 10 to 25 years or more. You’ll usually get a longer lifespan from soffit lights and wall-mounted lights that aren’t directly exposed to the elements or prone to damage from foot traffic or vehicle traffic. Solar-powered and battery-powered lights often won’t last as long, but you can still expect a lifespan of five to 15 years.

The average cost to install outdoor or landscape lighting is around $4,000, with most projects ranging from $2,000 to $6,000. The total cost can vary widely depending on several factors, including the number of fixtures, design complexity, and the type and quality of the lights used, such as wall sconces, pathway lights, or lamp posts. Other factors that influence the price are the square footage of the area being lit, the amount of electrical work needed, any required excavation or trenching, and local permitting costs. For specific types, you might pay around $100 for pathway or string lighting and up to $700 for lamp post lighting.

Common outdoor lighting issues include faulty or exposed wiring, burnt-out or damaged bulbs, and broken or faulty fixtures. Regular maintenance can help prevent many of these problems.

Inspect for burnt-out bulbs, secure connections, and protect from water exposure to maintain functionality.

Yes, outdoor lights and receptacles should be on a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for safety. The outdoors is considered a wet location where GFCI protection is generally required. A GFCI enhances safety by automatically tripping and shutting off the circuit if it detects an imbalance, which protects against electrocution and reduces the risk of an electrical fire. While it is the safest approach for all outdoor electrical components, specific requirements can vary depending on the type of light (e.g., pool lights), its location, and local electrical codes. For guidance tailored to your specific situation, it's best to consult a professional electrician.
