"I met with four companies, and 3D Solar was by far the best. They were professional and on-time for the initial sales pitch. If they didn't have the answers to all of my questions right away, they got back to me quickly which was great. The whole process from start to finish (actually seeing results on your electric bill) can take four months, so be patient. Anyhow, the install went great, and 3D Solar was good about getting everything set up with the county and the electric company. Any issues or questions, and they have gotten back to me right away. I highly recommend this company for solar panels. Ask for Paul. He's very helpful!"

Chandelier Installation questions, answered by experts

While under-cabinet lighting isn’t a requirement, it’s one of those features that, once you add it, you’ll wonder how you ever functioned without it. Ask any interior designer or lighting designer, and they’ll tell you that lighting can transform the look and feel of a room. Under-cabinet lighting is also very functional: You can use it to highlight a display of collectibles, illuminate your work surface during mealtime prep, and more.

Motion-sensor lights use one watt while on standby and five watts while turned on. They’re usually on for one hour over a 24-hour period, bringing the total wattage to about 28 watts per day. LED lights use around 6.5 to 8 watts while on. If you leave an LED light on all night, with night ranging from 10 to 14 hours, you’re looking at using 65 to 112 watts a night. You can minimally cut your wattage in half by switching to a motion-sensor light.

Under-cabinet lighting is generally energy-efficient, especially when using LED technology. Compared to traditional ceiling lighting or older bulb types like halogen and incandescent, LED under-cabinet lights consume significantly less energy, which helps reduce operating costs. This applies to various forms, including strip lights, puck lights, and built-in fixtures. For an option that uses no electricity, consider battery-operated puck lights. While they require periodic battery replacements, they have the added advantage of functioning during a power outage.

You should hire a licensed electrician who is insured to perform any electrical work on your home, including lighting installation. States have different requirements for licensing and certifying electricians, so use Angi’s state licensing tool to review local guidelines.

Here are a few questions to ask electricians before hiring:

  • How many years of electrical experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you work with subcontractors?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three customer references?

You can install a ceiling light fixture using a similar process to the one described in this guide. Ceiling lights can have added difficulty because of their location. Working on a ladder with your head tipped back and your arms in the air isn't ideal, but with big projects come big rewards.
