"I called Adam White of Rourk Remodeling to look at my deck for a "facelift."   I appreciated his friendly, low-pressure manner and knew immediately his was the company to do the job.  He did a thorough evaluation of the 22-year-old deck, and after finding it structurally sound, recommended a power-wash and re-staining.  He offered he would either use a stain of my choice, but highly recommended Sherwin Williams for its durability and guarantee. (I agreed with his judgment.)  I also wanted my deck fenced in so my dogs could no longer jump through the spindles. We decided upon a green plastic mesh that matched the spindles.
Mr. White accomplished all the above in a time and professional manner.   My dogs did a lot of "supervising" and he was very good-natured with them (even if they got in the way.)   My deck looks brand new and my pets have a larger outside area to enjoy.  I would totally recommend him for decks and plan to use him for some interior improvements soon!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.

To maintain a skylight and ensure its performance over time, regular maintenance is required. This includes periodically cleaning the glass and frame to remove dirt, debris, and condensation. It is also crucial to inspect the seals and flashing at least once a year for any signs of wear, degradation, or leaks, paying special attention after heavy storms. Ensure that the drainage system is clear to prevent water buildup and potential leaks. Address minor issues like cracks promptly and consider occasional resealing to prevent drafts and moisture problems. While energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings or double glazing may require less upkeep, periodic professional servicing can help keep any skylight in optimal condition.

The most popular treatment for a skylight is skylight shades. There are five primary types: manual, motorized, blackout, cellular//honeycomb, and Venetian. Motorized skylight shades are the most convenient, especially for skylights that are higher up, but manual shades are the most cost-effective treatments. Cellular/honeycomb shades are a perfect option for anyone who wants energy efficiency and an attractive look.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.
