Customers say: True professional

"Ken Showed and did a great job. However, I was disappointed because he could not even give me a verbal estimate for the job. When he was finished and billed me I was very surprised by the charge. I had 2other estimate so based on those he was on the very high side. The reason I did not go with the previous experts was because they were very busy and we could not wait two months. Ken showed up and did the job in a timely manner, was very very nice. I would Encourage at least a verbal estimate."

"EXCELLENT!!!!! Just registered on Angie's list last night. Although I had heard of it, I had never checked it out. So happy that I did! Something Constructive (Patsy Cicala) was the first listing to catch my eye and the reason I contacted him is because of his award and ratings. It was around 8am today and I asked if he could do the job same day, before 3pm (without charging me extra). He just happened to be available and was there around 11am. The job went smooth, quick and I learned a bit about door knob/lock replacement. :) Afterward, I showed him several things that I want to do over the next year, of which, he can do all. He's very knowledgeable, personable and demonstrated rapid response/dependability/expertise. I look forward to working with Patsy in the future. Very happy that we connected through this service. He also recommended a Partner to do landscaping work, come Spring. Yay! Side note: When I picked up the hardware from Lowes this morning, they recommended that I contact [*** Link removed ***] which I did. I've rec'd several texts/emails saying that "due to high demand" it's taking longer than usual to find a contractor". I have yet to receive a lead (12 hours later). My recommendation: Call Something Constructive!!!!"

"Max was on time, professional, and very dedicated to getting the job done. He went above and beyond to paint our four rooms and our hallway - ceilings, trim, and walls. He fixed all of the drywall imperfections, moved all of the furniture, covered all of the area that was being painted and did an excellent job! He finished in two and 1/2 days. It looks to us like we have a new house. He also did an excellent job powerwashing our metal roof and gutters! We will definitely hire him again!"

Doors questions, answered by experts

Soft-close hinges are worth it if the benefits are a top priority. The biggest benefit of soft-close hinges is that they reduce stress on the cabinet frames, and extending the longevity of these pricey furnishings is a worthwhile investment. Plus, fixing noisy kitchen cabinets helps protect kids with careless fingers, reduces marks on the frames, and creates a quieter living space.

Many doorways feature two door jambs. These are installed on both sides of a doorway to prevent the door from swinging too far. Door jambs usually stop the door at 180 degrees when closed.  A doorway floor transition sits between the door jambs on the floor, helping to create a safer and more aesthetically pleasing transition from one flooring type to the next.

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

You can use any wood to make an interior door, provided it’s the right thickness. Common options for painted doors include pine or poplar for the stiles, rails, and mullions, and paint-grade plywood for the panels. You can also opt to make your own panels out of pine or poplar if you intend on staining the door instead. Opting for oak, maple, or another hardwood is another great option for a high-end door that will last for decades, but the wood will cost significantly more.

Continuous hinges are some of the sturdiest hinges available, which makes sense, given that they provide support along the entire side of the door. These hinges are often used for heavy commercial doors, but are impractically expensive and unnecessary for residential use. Among the hinges commonly used in homes, the ball-bearing hinge is the strongest, and it reduces friction to help heavy doors open more smoothly.
