"We love our basement remodel. Peter, Alex and his team were here when they said theyâ d be here, completed the job as described, and kept us updated along the way. The basement now looks and feels clean and bright. The additional space doesnâ t feel like a basement at all and is enjoyed by the whole family. We highly recommend Lux Renovations."

"Joe was very easy to work with, professional, and polite. His head worker Nico was the same, as well as the crew he brought with him. They knew what to do and were competent through the entire project. We were so pleased and happy we have more projects for Coastal Home Renovations, Joe, and Nico."

"Sergio with Home Pro Builders is excellent. His team has done several large projects for me, commercial and residential. His team has done demolition work, drywall repair and install, plaster repair, masonry, concrete pouring. He is quick to get the jobs scheduled and made sure I was happy with the project on every step of the way. I would 10/10 recommend him and his team!"

Customers say: Quick response

"I can't say enough good things about my experience with Randy Preston and his crew!! Randy helped me renovate a garage that was in SEVERE disrepair into a beautiful and charming studio cottage. The craftsmanship was excellent. I regularly get compliments and feedback that the cottage has the feel of a home that's been there forever (think circa 1940's cottage). The crew was always on time, kept the site neat and clean and were super easy & pleasant to work with. Randy's personality is "steady and calm" - nothing ever felt like a problem - if it was within his power, he handled it and if it wasn't, he helped me figure out next steps. Renovations are rarely stress-free but Randy's nature helped to make it as stress-free as possible. I think the thing I was most impressed with was his transparency and honesty. He was the only contractor that provided me with a fully itemized estimate. I knew exactly how much was budgeted for EVERYTHING and at the end of the construction, he actually credited me back money for things I would have NEVER known cost less then estimated. Every step of the process (that he had control of) was great. I'd hire him again in a heartbeat and hope I do get to use him again for a future project I have in mind. If I haven't gotten the point across yet, I highly highly recommend!!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

You should always use high-quality lumber for your framing in order to ensure it will last the test of time and resist moisture. Use 2-foot by 4-foot lumber that is pressure-treated for your framing.

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Yes, you can add a kitchenette to a basement. However, you’ll have to consider the costs associated with basement kitchenettes. If you’re starting from scratch in an unfinished basement, you’ll need to account for brand-new plumbing, electrical, flooring, and more in addition to the cost of the kitchenette. If you’re putting a kitchenette in an already finished basement equipped with plumbing and electrical, you’ll save considerable money.

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.

If you’re not sure which method of raising the ceiling is best for you, here are a couple of considerations to help you make that decision. A professional ceiling company will be able to help you determine the best option for your home.

  • How long you are planning to live there: although raising the basement ceiling will increase the value of your home, if you’re planning to sell the house, then go for raising the house.

  • The condition of the foundation: to lower the floors, your foundation has to be intact whereas raising the house will allow you to restore the damaged foundation.
