We had some unexpected issues with the spa tub, and when they installed the window, they found wood rot on the external siding that needed to be fixed. We had a change order for that. It took a little time to complete the job but his concern was the ruin of a lawn in pristine condition. He waited for the ground to dry before starting the portion of the work that required heavy equipment. The lot is also on a very steep downward angle . I feel that he completed the job in a timely manner considering that the weather continued to work against him. Upon finishing he left the property in excellent condition. He removed the 7 foot diameter root ball as well so one would never know the wreck it all had been . A tree can grow back from its stump, but full regrowth is unlikely (especially for more stubborn conifer trees). Instead, trees are more likely to send up a number of shoots from the dead stump, which will try to develop into primary stems over time. In other words, it will start to look increasingly bushy. The goal of killing and drying out a tree stump is to prevent that from happening, as well as make the stump easier to completely remove.

Leaving a tree stump in the ground poses several potential issues. Firstly, stumps can become a breeding ground for pests like termites or ants, which might spread to nearby healthy trees or structures. They can also attract fungi or diseases that could affect other plants nearby. Stumps left unattended could hinder future landscaping plans, obstructing new growth or making it challenging to mow. Additionally, as the stump decays, it might sprout new shoots, leading to unwanted tree growth. Removing stumps prevents these problems, enhancing the aesthetic and safety of the landscape.

The best tools for tree removal include a chainsaw for large trees, an ax for notching and cutting down small trees, and a wedge to help control the direction a tree falls in. A hatchet can be useful for very small trees, but won’t be effective for medium to large trees. 

Removing tree stumps is a dangerous and complex job that requires a high level of expertise. Many landscapers specialize in general lawn care and maintenance. But, some may have the proper licensing and qualifications needed to safely remove tree stumps. In most cases, though, landscapers will refer you to a local tree removal or stump grinding company.

The most common alternative is burning the stump first, then dealing with the cinders and ashes. As you can imagine, this option creates fire hazards, especially since roots can burn underground, hidden, for long afterward. That’s why many states and cities have outlawed the use of stump burning entirely. We do not recommend this option as a viable alternative unless you get a permit from the local fire department and practice all safe burning procedures.

Others prefer a more long-term DIY approach of degrading the stump with home mixtures like Epsom salt and vinegar injected directly into it. This may help the stump decay faster, allowing homeowners to dig it out themselves, but it’s still a lengthy process. It usually takes months for a stump to start falling apart with such treatments, and in the meantime, it can be vulnerable to rot, insects, and other problems.
