Small jobs welcome

"I hired Alex Masonry to remove and rebuild a retaining wall that was leaning. After some discussion, I decided to expand the project to include new bluestone caps and to re-do my cracked concrete walkway with pavers. Alex and his crew did an outstanding job. Alex is extremely knowledgeable, personable and a pleasure to work with. His pricing is very reasonable. He and his team did a great job. Hard workers, with great attention to detail. I would highly recommend Alex Masonry!"

"They did a great job, the only minuses would be that our project was a small one, they did it as a side job. So we had to wait a little longer than we wanted and pay cash as we don't have checks and they didn't take cards. Other than that if we have any additional hardscaping or masonry needed, they will be our first call."

"Repaired and rebuilt front door brick steps and added 1-1/2â thick bluestone step treads. Did an excellent job and were very prompt and conscientious with their work. They were also low bid of four bids we received. Highly recommend AAAA+"

Customers say: Quick response

"I recently hired I&B Masonry, LLC contractor to work on several projects at my home in Old Lyme, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. This contractor demonstrated exceptional skill and attention to detail in every aspect of the job. The primary task was to repair the front brick walkway and the bluestone steps. The finished product is not only sturdy and well-crafted but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of our entrance. In addition to the main entrance, the contractor repaired the entrance to the pool area and constructed an impressive ramp for our golf cart. The craftsmanship was top-notch, blending seamlessly with the existing design. Throughout the project, the contractor was professional, reliable, and punctual. The quality of work exceeded my expectations, and I am delighted with the outcome. I am happy to give this mason contractor an overall rating of five stars."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

When painting brick, each application method has pros and cons. Spraying is much faster but may not penetrate the porous surface of the bricks. Rolling is effective for getting paint into the bricks but doesn't work as well on the mortar. Brushing is very time-consuming and also won't penetrate beyond the surface. For the best results, a combination of spraying and rolling is often recommended. If you use a roller, choose a thick option (at least a half-inch) and ensure the paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage.

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.

Yes, as long as the cut is clean and the brick remains structurally sound, you can reuse it. Reusing brick is especially common for landscaping, edging, and small masonry repairs. Just make sure to file down any sharp edges before handling or installing it.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

Depending on the amount of soot present, you can vacuum some of it using a brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Then, remove the leftovers with a mild cleaner, such as dish soap or vinegar mixed with water. Before applying a cleaning solution, saturate the bricks with clean water to prevent the cleaner from penetrating beyond the surface and causing structural damage to the bricks.
