"Kurt did an excellent job, saving our windows from needing full replacement. Less experienced carpenters turned down the job as the rot was extensive. Kurt left them looking better than when we purchased the house. He communicated well about the work and always let me know when he'd be arriving. He was also just a really nice person to have around for a long and tedious job -- friendly and pleasant, working hard through a heat wave. I recommend him without hesitation."

"Graeden was referred by a friend for what began as a few smaller projects — patching and painting, etc. From the very beginning, he was prompt, professional, and incredibly detail-oriented. As work progressed, I decided to refinish the hardwood floors on the first floor. The results were stunning. Seeing how beautifully the floors turned out inspired me to paint the entire first floor. Throughout the entire three-month project, Graeden was flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to accommodate additional tasks without hesitation. His workmanship is meticulous, especially when it comes to the finishing touches. He take pride in his craft and worked with me to ensure my vision became reality. Pricing was very reasonable, communication was excellent from start to finish. The end result is truly fabulous! It feels like a brand new home! I can't thank him enough! I highly recommend Graeden to anyone who is looking for quality workmanship and a contractor who genuinely cares about his work."

"Matt has done multiple projects for me, including kitchen cabinet refacing, applying new kitchen tile, kitchen floor and all new inside doors. Everything was done timely and with excellence. Matt gave me an estimate and stayed within budget. He arrives on time and cleans up as he works. He is very polite and takes the time to answer questions completely. While he was here for my door replacement, I asked him if he could install a flag on my house, that would require a base built where it attached to the house. He completed it by improvising a beautiful custom wood mount for the flag. I highly recommend Matt for any project you may have."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Landscape timbers can last 10 to 20 years in the ground when installed correctly. Pressure-treated timbers will last longer than non-treated ones, as pressure treatment makes the wood more rot-resistant. Wood exposed to high moisture levels or extreme temperature and weather fluctuations may not last as long as wood in drier areas with more consistent weather.

Board and batten is a type of wainscotting that uses wider boards that are placed vertically, and it has a much more rustic aesthetic than wainscotting. Common wainscotting styles are raised-panel, flat-panel, and beadboard. Wainscotting is more intricate and will typically use more elegant, subtle trims compared to the more farmhouse-inspired boards of board and batten styles.

While the Arts and Crafts movement inspired many architectural elements, the primary styles from the time include Craftsman, Tudor Revivals, bungalows, and Mission homes. You'll see elements of these styles in homes, churches, museums, and schools—particularly Country Day schools from the era.

If you’re just replacing a few broken or damaged joists, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300 per joist. However, a complete installation for a home or room will take into account the cost of labor, which ranges from $25 to $40 per hour. Floor joist installation for an entire room, for example, can cost between $5,000 and $10,000, depending on the room's size and the materials used.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.
