"Isaac Ayala is amazing, along with his tree trimming helpers. I submitted a request online for tree trimming quotes on April 1 at 11 a.m. I had no sooner submitted an online request for a quote when Isaac called me and we set an appointment for 3 pm that day to meet to look at 5 large (70') cottonwoods that needed serious trimming at my daughter's house outside Rifle. Of course, Isaac arrived a half-hour early for our appointment. Isaac said he was between jobs for a day or 2 and gave me what I thought was a fair price for trimming the tall cottonwoods. Isaac wanted to do the trimming on April 2. He showed up at my daughter's ranch and did a fantastic job over a 6-hour period trimming tall cottonwoods. Our agreed-upon price only included dropping the wood and not having it chipped or hauled away. To shorten this story, Isaac's 2 helpers ended up picking up all the logs and branches and tossing them into a nearby gully. I hoped I tipped the 2 ground guys enough!! The crew picked up all the branches, raked, and basically left the land in the same condition as before starting. I asked Isaac what outdoor tree/landscape/sprinkler/concrete/masonry work that he and his associates could NOT provide. He said, "We do it all." And, I believe him. He is that good Dr. Kirk Beattie Rifle, CO"

Small jobs welcome

"Isaac & his crew were very professional. Arrived right on time and removed a 50 foot cottonwood in just over an hour. They made sure the yard was cleaned up, even beyond my expectations. I would certainly recommend them to anyone needing landscape work and or tree removal. I am also having them come back later this fall to remove the stump and clean up roots that have surfaced in the yard. Thanks Isaac for a great job done!! :)"

"Luke was amazing. He gave us a quick quote that was reasonable. He started and worked when he said he would. He kept us updated and sent pictures afterward. The quality of his work was excellent. I was so pleased with his work. He went above and beyond by doing a couple extra things for us as we were out of state. I would and will recommend him to anyone looking for a professional quality painter!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Before you cut down a dead palm tree, try to revive it using the methods listed above. However, there are instances when it makes sense to remove a dead palm tree, including:

  • The heavily infected tree will infect nearby trees, bushes, and plants.

  • The palm’s roots are overtaking your yard, foundation, and sidewalk and causing structural damage.

  • The tree is unstable and a hazard to your property, your neighbor’s property, and pedestrians.

Horticulturist is a broad term for any type of plant and soil expert. An arborist, meanwhile, specializes in all aspects of tree care. You should hire an arborist when you need assistance with tree-related tasks, such as pruning large trees, removing trees, diagnosing a sick tree, or emergency tree services. Horticulturists aren’t qualified to handle those types of tasks.

Finding a reliable arborist starts with researching specialists in your area and checking their licensing and certifications. Use online resources like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to conduct research on each company. Next, contact the arborist and ask the following questions to see whether they are the right fit for your project:

  • Do you handle or specialize in dealing with the issue I’m having?

  • Are you fully insured?

  • Do you have customer references I can call?

  • Do you have any third-party certifications?

  • What equipment and strategies do you plan to use?

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

Though summer is not ideal, you can do some light pruning during this time of year. Just make sure it’s not excessive. Vigorous pruning will stress the tree and impact next year’s growth. Generally, August to September are the best summer-pruning months, particularly for fruit trees.
