"I have known Rudy for over 14 years, he started working with us peeling logs, then he completely stuccoed my house a few years later and did a excellent job, just lately I had him come back and repair some drywall cracks in my garage which were caused form foundation settling. I believe he is capable of doing a excellent job on almost anything."

"It went very well! We were very impressed with Jon and his crew. They were very conscientious and did excellent work. Jon communicated well so we knew what was happening and they finished much earlier than I had anticipated. They really worked to keep the mess to a minimum and not displace us longer than necessary. We are very pleased with the results!!!"

Garages questions, answered by experts

The best way to maintain a garage door and avoid issues is to hire someone to do a garage door tune-up, check the remote opener, and service the main system components, like the springs, chains, and track. Schedule maintenance service once every two years for $100 to $200. You can also DIY garage door maintenance, like washing and waxing the door and applying lubricant to hinges and rollers regularly.

The smallest size a standard 2-car garage can be is 20 feet by 20 feet, so at these dimensions, you could reasonably expect to fit two cars inside. However, it’s going to be a tight fit, especially if you have larger SUVs or pickup trucks. For smaller cars, 20 x 20 should be plenty for parking and some space to maneuver around the cars. A larger garage size would be better to ensure you have room to open the doors and transport groceries or other items around the cars.

If your garage door seems to freeze every winter, you can try rubbing silicone spray or petroleum jelly around the edges and rollers of the garage door. However, it’s a good idea to avoid direct application of silicone sprays like WD40 to rubber edges, which could damage them over time. A garage door that frequently freezes shut could need a full replacement, especially if it’s showing signs of rust or other wear and tear.

It is highly recommended to prime a metal surface, like a garage door, before painting. Primer creates a stable surface for the paint to adhere to, which helps prevent bubbling, chipping, and peeling. This ensures the paint job will last longer. Painting metal without a primer can lead to poor adhesion and allow rust to bleed through the new paint. If the surface already has rust spots, you can cover them with a zinc chromate primer before applying the final coat. While priming adds an extra step and cost, it is a worthwhile investment for a durable, long-lasting finish. For best results, also use a paint specifically designed for metal.

In some cases, a detached garage can be considered extra living space, but you will need to gain permission and comply with your local building code. Depending on where you live, you may need permits for a variety of installations, including electrical work, plumbing, and structural work. Many homeowners make the mistake of converting a garage into a living space without acquiring permits, which can result in hefty fines and even the removal of your hard work. Furthermore, a detached garage doesn’t add to the livable square footage of your home when it’s time to sell.
