"Our main water line was leaking with hardly any pressure to our house. Upon calling Holmes Excavation the Friday before Christmas, they were up at our house within 90 minutes. After agreeing to their services, they arranged for the locate services for electric, gas, and phone before the end of the day and before the weekend to prepare for their work starting on Monday. Our water service was restored by the end of the day on Monday, and they finished backfilling the next day--2 days before Christmas! While their equipment was still at our house, my wife asked if they could pull out some nasty roots from her garden. They did so without hesitation and I was able to cross that off of my "to do" list and saving my back for another project. Thank you to all involved--Bill, Mark, Rob, Gerado (sp?), Jose and anyone else I may have missed!"

"Quick response to the Home Advisor notification from Vail Techs Mechanical and they were at my home the next day. They were very forthright in what was causing my heating issue and minimized the cost to rectify. Contacted me two days after their service call to check the fix."

"After our home burned down we found Grand Lake Excavating to do our clean up and demo. They were great! Mike and his team handled everything with our insurance company and we couldn’t be happier. I would highly recommend them and look forward to working with them on the construction of our new house."

"The main problem with this contractor is with the subcontractors they use. The flooring people were great. The remodeling and painting people were not. The workmanship was not of high quality. We have had issues with the folding closet doors they installed -- one broke within two months of installation. When they originally installed them, they didn't paint the ends of the doors, so that showed when they were open. Then, when they came back to paint them, they knocked a hole in one of them and it had to be patched. You can still see the patch. The biggest issue has been with the egress window they installed in the sitting room adjacent to the bedroom. That room has been flooded TWICE in the less than two years since the remodel. The subcontractor who installed the window well did a poor job of it. We have had to remove the engineered hardwood floor twice and pay for water remediation both times. The first time it flooded, I called the contractor to inquire about warranties (it had only been a couple of months since installation), or to at least get contact information for the subcontractor. My call was never returned. Once they were paid for the job, they had no further interest in our satisfaction. Very disappointing."

"These guys did an amazing job. Their work ethic is out of this world. Even when it came time for the cleanup they did not miss a beat. No nails or any debris let anywhere. I am talking about on the driveway, grass, yard, or even our neighbors yards. They were that thorough. I would give them a 10 out 10. These guys were very professional. I would recommend this company to all my friends and neighbors. Don was great to work with and I am referring him to all our friends and neighbors. 5 star rating!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The cost to drill a well varies, with a national average of around $5,500 for a 150-foot well. However, prices can fluctuate significantly based on several factors, including your location, the required well depth, geological conditions, local regulations, and the specific drilling methods used. For the most accurate cost assessment, it is best to research and get quotes from local well-drilling professionals in your area.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

While you can save some money by digging your own pool, you may end up paying more in construction equipment rental fees in the long run. You could, however, focus your DIY energies on lowering the cost of leveling your lawn for your pool or filling in surrounding landscaping after construction.

Chipmunks dig their burrows about three feet deep and up to 30 feet long. The entrances can be two inches wide or more. Chipmunks are fiercely protective of their burrows and use them to protect the nuts and seeds they gather for the long winters.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.
