"I thought I'd get through the winter before reviewing. Drive is already beginning to crack. Edges are terrible. On a business call when they dug 4" to add a pull off. I watched them pull our streetlamp wire out of the ground about 3'. The light no longer works. When telling Noel, he insisted they did nothing to the light. I watched them do it! Then they spread the dirt and rock across the front yard, causing even more work for me. Noel stated multiple times they put grass seed in when spreading. Not so!. Also stood at the front window and watched him and one of the crew yelling at each, then get physical into the garage. The asphalt looked terrible when finished and I asked why it wasn't sealed. He then said it wasn't included but would return to seal, which he did. Drive looks decent but not as expected. Wish I could give a better review. With the damage to the streetlamp and yard, it probably should even be 2."

Asphalt driveways are affordable and able to withstand sub-zero temperatures. The asphalt surface makes it easy to plow snow, and it has excellent traction for slippery winter days. Another benefit: it absorbs heat from the sun and can then help to melt snow and ice more quickly than other surfaces.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Unlike drying, which takes between 48 and 72 hours on average, asphalt driveway cure times are different and take much longer. Your asphalt driveway won’t actually cure for around six months to one year. During this time, it’s more likely to get damaged or weakened by heavy machinery, vehicles, and high temperatures. 

Asphalt is not the same thing as blacktop. Blacktop is a type of asphalt, but contains less bitumen, making it less durable than asphalt. Asphalt is a better option for major highways, streets, and driveways, while blacktop is more suitable to playgrounds.
