"Joe did great job of replacing old tin with new tin on the barn. Also, frame out and put in 2 sliding doors. Not easy to work with an old barn. Very prompt to respond, good quality of work and fair price. I will be using Joe with future projects. Brad C"

"Steve did an awesome job organizing crews to come in for the different phases of drywalling my 1,178SF basement. All the guys had a great work ethic and were very skilled, and Steve reached out to me often throughout the job to keep me up to date. Highly recommend Elite Gypsum for your drywall needs! Only recommendation I’d give is for the home owner to put construction paper down, or pay Steve to do it, so cleanup is much easier. I put it down before mudding started and it made a huge difference."

"I had a broken tension spring and could not Open (Old)garage door . .JD called me straight a way. He came over and checked to see if he had a spring w/him that would work. He said he could order one, and I said, yes please. W/all things happening, he could not say for sure how quick this would happen. Two days later he called and installed spring. He also replaced the drums that wind the cables going to bottom of door. Balanced the door. Works great. And Before the snow. Hard to get things like this done in Resort towns."

"Yuni has a great attitude and is very helpful. He helped us with more than painting. He helped us demo a tub and countertops. He also helped us lay some slate tile. He was on time, his crews worked hard, and he followed through on everything he promised. We recommend Yuni!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.
