There are two ways to determine which renovation will add the most value to a house. Stucco applied over brick can last 30 to 50 years or more when correctly applied and properly maintained. Stucco’s lifespan can be shortened by improper application, incorrectly mixed material, lack of preparation before application, and lack of maintenance. To get the most life out of your stucco siding, keep up with maintenance and repair any damage as soon as you discover it.
Stucco is very challenging to DIY, so it’s always best to leave the work to professional stucco contractors. The same recommendation applies to painting a stucco house, which should be left in the reliable hands of a professional exterior painter.
Inexperienced DIYers can make several critical mistakes during stucco application, such as:
Failing to apply sufficiently thick layers for longevity and water resistance
Uneven application
Uneven texture across the exterior
Mixing the stucco improperly, leaving a weak structure
Failing to texture properly in between coats, leading to cracking and chipping
You can apply stucco to wood by wrapping it with grade D waterproof paper, installing trim accessories such as metal lath, control joints, weep screeds, casing beads, and expansion joints, and applying the stucco in three layers. You’ll need a scratch coat, brown coat, and finish coat, all applied with a trowel and screeded with a darby or straight edge. Each should cure for two days before you apply the next one.
If you're installing stucco in a climate with extreme weather, synthetic stucco may be the only viable option, as it lasts longer, is less prone to cracking, and resists moisture better. Traditional stucco is a suitable option in hot climates where moisture and rainfall are less common, so it’s a good option for affordability both up front and over time in these areas.
