"Dylan is an exceptional craftsman. I have used him for countless jobs while restoring my 1913 duplex. He was able to manipulate a variety of salvaged materials that I requested to create the perfect complements to the original beautiful wood. Dylan was prompt, fair, and detail-oriented. I would recommend Dylan to anyone looking for exceptional work."

Customers say: Quick response

"I had an ugly, builder grade staircase from 1979. Brian and Bill did an amazing job updating my staircase to the 21st Century. They are very meticulous and careful with each step of the remodel. It was fairly extensive job and done wonderfully. It is really a work of art. They are true Craftsmen. That's extremely rare in this day and age. Christina was also very professional, and had great input for the design phase. Really glad I picked Out of the Woodworks for my project."

"Steve put in a new staircase from the garage into our house. It was a pleasure talking with someone so knowledgeable about how to do it and so patient to discuss different options. He made all the right suggestions on the materials using higher end material where it mattered. The end product was great, better than we had envisioned. It is so good to know someone who can dependably tackle most any small to mid size home project with competency and at a more than fair price. Best service we’ve had in a long long time."

"We were very pleased with this company's work. They were able to complete our project on time and on budget with artistic skill matching the design to our steeply sloping landscape. Our trust in their competence was not displaced. Fernando carefully supervised the project almost daily and his crew was excellent."

Small jobs welcome

"I hired this contractor to scrape and sand old paint off an existing patio railing. They had a lot of prep work to before they could start the painting. They worked the whole time, with just one break, they came prepared to get the job done. I would recommend them to others, and I would hire them again."

Small jobs welcome

"We had Juan do some pretty extensive deck repair and replace a fluorescent light in our kitchen. Just before he was ready to work on the kitchen light, we changed our mind on what we wanted installed. Juan took all that in stride and we worked out the schedule. And the work on both the deck and the lights look GREAT. We have a couple of other projects in mind and are definitely calling Juan when we are ready to get them done."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.

No, you do not usually tip a carpenter for their work. However, if you’ve been very happy with the level of service and quality of work, a 10% to 20% tip would likely be accepted with thanks. If you’re not sure, it can help to discuss the carpenter’s policy or preference for tipping before beginning the project.

Carpentry is a skilled trade and requires many years of experience to acquire the skills necessary to do the job efficiently and correctly. Because every home requires a carpenter at some stage of the building process, carpenters are typically in high demand. The higher the skill level, the higher the hourly rate the carpenter can charge.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.
