Mike helped with exterior trim and paint, as well as adding pine wood to the ceilings and walls inside to match the original wood. Mike is an excellent carpenter and all around worker. "The project started well, but on the final day, the contractors unexpectedly claimed they made a mistake and demanded an additional $8000, threatening legal action if not paid. I verified Colorado law, which states they had six months to place a lien on our property, requiring notification within three days of doing so, and by registered mail after the lien was placed. We took no action, avoiding reviews or contact. They have since blocked us from their website and emails. Ultimately, they never placed a lien, and the six-month period has passed. Now that everything is resolved, I want to leave a review. While I am satisfied with the project's outcome, I am unhappy with their conduct, including the legal threats and the last-minute demand for more money. His wife, not him, conducted the final walkthrough and provided the warranty and a statement confirming full payment. He even verbally admitted to putting our project on the "back burner" when I questioned the delay."

It’s usually best to build a garage in the summer or fall, with most homeowners preferring the fall. Winter might bring frozen ground that can make excavating and pouring a foundation a challenge, and spring tends to bring more rainfall, which can delay the building process. Most homeowners who DIY portions of their garage build prefer fall over summer, as the temperature is usually cooler and more conducive to the strenuous work required to build the structure.

In most cases, it’s cheaper to build a garage, but it depends on how much of the labor you do yourself. If you can do most of it yourself, it tends to be cheaper than buying a prefab garage. But if you hire a contractor to build it, it’ll likely end up more expensive than a prefab garage.

A prefab, or prefabricated garage, requires far less construction work than one with a foundation and frame, but it’s not nearly as desirable and may not be a worthwhile option. A prefabricated garage won’t be as durable or long-lasting, and it doesn’t provide the same protection for your belongings and vehicles. Plus, you can use a standard garage for more uses—like living space—whereas a prefab garage only serves as a space for storage. Lastly, building a traditional garage will add to your home value, while a prefab garage usually won’t.

Since building up tends to provide useful bedrooms and other extra spaces without the need to do a lot of foundation work and cut into your yard, second stories tend to have better ROI—up to 65%—than other kinds of additions. But ROI will depend on the type of rooms you are planning and what your current house has. It’s not a very reliable way to judge the success or failure of a project, so consider other factors as well.
