"I've reviewed Rick before -- the more we use his service the more we appreciate him!  This time we had a mystery  -- flickering lights, power drops to things like the microwave and other appliances, but breakers (and everything we could test ourselves) looked fine.  We had several contractor friends try to figure out what was wrong, but couldn't pin it down.  One suggestion was it might be a power  problem with  PG&E, but our friend said to get a specialist to scope out the system before we called them.  That meant Rick.
I called him, and he got back to me in the morning.  He sandwiched us in among several emergency calls and arrived exactly when he said he would -- with my tight schedule, that's appreciated.  I met him in front of the house and told him what was happening.  Before we even went inside, he looked up at the weatherhead and said he could see at least one problem -- looked like we might have a burned wire up there.  He went to get his ladder and check.
Moments later, he came down and said we had a badly-deteriorated ground wire that he was going to replace immediately, and that he would come back and replace the other wires as well, since they had probably been there since the house was built in the 50s.  We made sure the computers were shut down and he went up on the roof again.
About an hour later the microwave (which was our most visible symptom) was operating without power drops.  He could have counted the problem solved -- a lot of guys would.  But this morning, he called me and said he still wanted to replace the other wires, and tape them with weather-resistant material, just to make sure.
Between our home and another property of ours, we've used Rick's services eight times now -- for the heating system (as reviewed before), to add security lights, electrify a couple of outbuildings, put in some vent fans, repair some bad wiring, and now this lovely bit of detective work.  Just one more reason Mr. Alves is our go-to guy.

"Outstanding Quality and Professionalism Across Multiple Projects! We cannot recommend Craig Tirk highly enough. He and his team have completed four separate painting projects for us across two different locations, and every single experience has been fantastic. Craig's work included: A full kitchen remodel/painting in Ukiah, CA. A major, full house painting project (interior and exterior) in Ukiah, CA. A full apartment renovation/painting in Willits, CA. An additional residential house painting project in Willits, CA. The consistency of his professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to quality is truly remarkable. For every job, Craig was communicative, punctual, and ensured the work area was kept clean and tidy. The finished results are flawless and have significantly improved the value and appearance of all the properties. If you are looking for a reliable, professional painter who handles complex and multiple-site projects with ease, Craig Tirk is the best choice."

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

There are a few advantages to hiring a handyperson as a contractor, namely that they will likely charge less for their services since they don’t have as much overhead. A handyperson might also have more flexibility and be more involved in your specific home project, so you can communicate with one person instead of a subcontractor team.

Before hiring a handyperson, it's important to ask several questions to ensure they are the right fit for the job. Key areas to cover include their experience, logistics, and job specifics.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • What kind of work do you specialize in?

  • How long have you been doing this kind of work?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

  • Do you have references?

  • Can you provide before-and-after photos of your work?

Estimates and Contracts:

  • Do you charge for estimates?

  • Will you provide a written estimate and contract?

  • Does the estimate cover both labor and materials?

  • How much do you expect materials to cost?

Project Details and Guarantees:

  • When can you start the job, and how long do you expect it to take?

  • Do you provide a guarantee for your work?

  • Will you handle cleanup and waste disposal after the job is finished?

  • Do you have any questions about the projects on my list?

Most professional appliance removal companies will not expect a tip, but offering one is a good way to show appreciation for a job well done. A tip of 10% to 20% is a good idea if your professionals are working in the rain or snow, if they take extra care not to damage your walls and furniture in the removal process, or if they need to maneuver the appliance through tight spaces or up or down stairs to get it out of your home.

If a contractor is in breach of your contract, sometimes it is possible to collect damages for unreasonable delays. However, such claims can be expensive and difficult to prove. If there’s a way to complete the work and maybe negotiate for a discount for some of the inconvenience, that might be a simpler and cheaper way to resolve any disputes.
