"We recently had Mega Power Electric Inc install a solar system and panels. The President and provided excellent communication all the way through the process. He even met with us after installation to explain the almost incomprehensible PG&E bill. Although not the least expensive bid, his was competitive and I felt he was as interested in educating me about solar and the various types of panels and inverter systems as he was in selling a system. He demonstrated how the array of panels would meet our energy needs and as opposed to some of the other companies, wasn't selling us more than we needed. We are very satisfied with our solar system and I highly recommended Mega Power Electric Inc."

"Went very well, had trouble with the ceiling due to the way the handyman took out and repaired a soffit so Bryson had to have his man come back to repaint ceiling. I have the original metal cabinets from when grandma and grandpa built the house in 48 and they turned out beautiful. They have held up to the cleaning and still look like they were painted yesterday."

"Ryan's Structural Termite Control was great! Ryan was super informative and friendly. I liked his innovative preventive care against termites where no tenting was required. I have pets so making sure all substances were pet friendly was extremely important to me. He made sure the work was thoroughly performed and that every external facing wall was covered. Definitely will recommend to anyone looking into termite control without the hassle of tenting!"

"I went with Expert Home Builders on a room addition. The big and expensive project and bog responsibility but I'm happy I hired this contractor. David and his team showed up on time and they were great from first day to end of this project. David was knowledgeable, honest and helpful. He informed me about working progress all the time and contacted me immediately if there was something important. His team worked hard, kept working area clean as possible, they were professional, friendly and quick also. The project was finished ahead of schedule and results are excellent. The quality of work is superb, overall experience excellent and price very acceptable. I would highly recommend Expert Home Builders to all people I know!"

"Manning's Handyman Service was recommended to us by another excellent and reputable local company (Wow Pest Control). Unbeknownst to us, we had a very involved undertaking requiring extensive work to repair and install screens on all of our vents as well as to enclose a sizable hole in one exterior wall and seal our crawlspace. Arnold was extremely knowledgeable and helpful when communicating over the phone and provided outstanding work. I had the expectation that everything would be functionally covered, but Arnold actually took the time to make everything look good including color matching the stucco around the periphery of each item. His kindness, work ethic, and attention to detail were so very appreciated. We are already planning future projects because of our positive experience. Thank you Manning's!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.
