"STAY CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY. The company committed to do the work they were not capable of doing, and did not even have the legal right to do in California without a contractor's license. It was replacing deck railings and rebuilding a porch in South Lake Tahoe. The owner was polite and friendly before I started paying him the money, but totally changed later and kept demanding more money. The cost of the job, not too low to start with kept going up all the time, finally increasing by more than $10K. The owner would refuse to continue working if I did not pay more and more money upfront. He also refused to provide any receipts. After my single attempt to speak with the workers he snapped at me. The completion date was crucial in my case since I needed to finish the project before the winter season. The original completion date (end of September) kept moving forward as they worked very rarely and very short shifts (typically 10am to 3pm). During the entire course of the project there were constant excuses for not working (ill relatives, employees getting married, employees quitting etc.) Eventually the owner GUARANTEED the completion date of the project (mid-November) in exchange for an extra payment, but failed to deliver by the agreed upon date. I had to fire this company in the middle of November since I lost any confidence that the job would be completed and the quality would be acceptable. By the time I fired the company (3+ months into the project that was supposed to take less than 2 months): ■ deck railings were installed poorly - with a lot of cosmetic defects, uneven spacing and with a major safety hazard: they "forgot" to secure the top rail to the posts per manufacturers instruction; ■ the porch was demolished and the new one was not built. A crude frame was put in place but was so uneven and defective, it had to be rebuilt; ■ materials already paid for were not delivered (redwood), and the materials already delivered (trex flooring) were cut wrong and essentially destroyed. At that point I already paid this company $5000 above the initial invoice. The company owner disappeared and did not react to my request of a refund."

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Fabric awnings provide shade, reduce energy costs, and enhance outdoor aesthetics.

You can indeed open your awning in winter. It’s a misconception that you can only open retractable awnings in the warmer months. In fact, modern awnings are strong enough to offer a little respite from the snow if you’re someone who enjoys sipping hot cocoa outside on a beautiful winter day. But if a big storm is coming, such as a hurricane or a blizzard, it’s best to close your awning until the weather calms down.

Regular cleaning, inspecting for wear, and retracting during storms extend its lifespan.

Yes, you can convert a fabric awning to a metal one. You just need to swap the fabric for metal panels, which are more durable and weather-resistant. However, the support frame will probably need reinforcement to handle the added weight. You should consult a pro to address any structural concerns.

Clean regularly with mild soap and water, and retract during severe weather to prevent damage.
