"I am on my 5th move with Make Your Move Folsom. Calling Kevin was the best decision I could have made. The team took the stress, worry, and hassle out of everything. The team always shows up, handles everything with care, and moves me quickly and professionally. I am moving to Colorado, and I knew this move would be a little different for me as I needed to move some stuff to storage and pack up a uhaul to transport myself - the team did it all & made it so so easy! My family has also used Kevin and his company in the past, I remember the first time that I called Kevin for a quote, he asked me a few questions and quickly remembered details about my family and previous moves. Kevin cares about his clients and is very customer service oriented. Since my last move, he has expanded his business and now has a great team working customer service in the office. I have enjoyed talking to Linda and Erin, who got me all set up for this last move. Sadly, I am moving out of state, and this was probably my last move with the team, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company to friends and family in the greater Sacramento area!"

"Overall, my experience was very good. The person who helped me with my quote was responsive and personable. We did have some communication issues regarding some of the items we wanted moved. We crews that helped us with the physical move worked very hard and provided solutions when issues came up. The single recommendation I could provide to anyone is be 100% sure everything you want to move is on the digital inventory at least 5 days before moving day. The day of the move, I found things were missing on the digital inventory even though we talked about it."

Moving questions, answered by experts

No, homeowners insurance does not typically cover moving expenses. Homeowners insurance provides coverage and pay-outs if you experience damage to the home you currently live in. You’ll need to save separately for moving expenses like hiring movers, renting a tow truck, or shipping your belongings.

There are several effective ways to save money when hiring a moving company, primarily by handling some tasks yourself and being strategic with scheduling. Consider these methods:

  • Pack Your Own Belongings: You can significantly reduce costs by packing and protecting your items yourself. This includes wrapping delicate items, organizing them into boxes, and taping the boxes closed. You can use towels, clothes, and suitcases to pack belongings and protect breakables.

  • Provide Your Own Materials: Source free packing materials from friends and family, or reuse boxes and bubble wrap from a previous move.

  • Schedule Strategically: Book your move well in advance. Rates are often lower if you schedule your move on a weekday during the off-season, which typically runs from October through April.

  • Compare Quotes: Get moving quotes from at least three professional movers in your area. This allows you to compare services and choose the best value.

  • Ask for Discounts: Inquire if the moving company offers any special coupons or deals.

  • Purchase Moving Insurance: Protect your investment by purchasing moving insurance, especially for expensive or antique belongings.

  • Divide the Labor: While you can save money by packing, it's wise to leave the more dangerous and physically demanding work—like loading, unloading, and moving heavy furniture—to the professionals.

It's typically best to hire movers who specialize in moving pianos because moving them often requires specific equipment and finesse, especially when it comes to grand pianos. However, some standard moving companies have experienced piano movers on their team, so it never hurts to call a company and ask about their piano moving expertise.

Yes, you can very carefully lay down a grandfather clock to move it, but it requires a bit of prep work. Remember, all of your clock's components and mechanisms are delicate, and shifting them can cause serious damage. Before laying it down, you will need to remove these pieces, plus the weights and the pendulum.

The cost to rent a moving truck is $1,000, with a typical range running between $20 and $3,500, depending on the truck size and how far you are moving.
