"Do not use this guy. He replaced a quality lock with a cheap deadbolt and door handle charging me $250.00 and stole the lock he replaced. Shody work, made a huge mess in my house and didn't have plastic covers to collect all the woodchips from drilling unnecessarily into the door. Kept telling me that his work is guaranteed and when I called him back saying the door rattles in the wind, he said to get weather striping. When confronted on the theft of the original door lock, hemed and keep talking that he could not remember taking the brand new door lock I wanted to return to HomeDepo. I was considering calling the Police. Run from this con-man."

We had cameras and an alarm system installed; it was a relatively large system. They outsource most of the work to various vendors. They could not manage their vendors; what was supposed to take a week took two months. The sales rep did not return calls, and you could never get anyone in management on the phone. Random people would show up at unannounced times. The few things that an actual Guardian employee did were they made a huge mess of our newly remodeled office and were rude to our staff. Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

Lubricating a door lock is an important part of door lock maintenance. It involves taking the lubricant of your choice (it’s best to use whatever the lock’s manufacturer suggests) and spraying it directly into the keyway. Push and pull your key in and out of the lock to make sure it’s all the way in. 

Standard residential deadbolt locks come with a steel bolt that locks your door into place using a key (or keypad) on one side and a thumb turn on the other. When you lock it, the bolt slides into a strike plate on your door jamb to secure your door shut.

If your door handle turns without opening, the most likely culprit is a loose or stripped spindle. This part connects the handles to the latch mechanism, and when it’s not properly engaged, turning the handle does nothing. Other issues might include a broken latch, loose screws, or even something small blocking an inner mechanism. In any case, it’s usually a matter of tightening, adjusting, or replacing a worn-out part inside the handle assembly—or calling in a professional to do it for you.

Thieves can open almost anything with enough time and the right tools, but they also prefer easy targets that are unlikely to get them caught. Forcing open gates is loud and difficult, and to be able to open one electronically requires extensive knowledge of the system, which most thieves don't have. Electric and other security gates are great deterrents because the thief will move to an easier target. If the thief is determined to enter your property, they will most likely find a different entrance point.
