He is also very knowledgable and has great resources that help him be creative in his projects. He took on a very challenging home drainage issue I had that required putting perimeter drainage around two sides of my house. I had a leaking basement and a home that a very difficult rock in the depths of the earth. "Worst construction company I have ever dealt with. I have 20 years in the construction trade. I should have known better. The price was too good to be true. We hired them for a large patio and retaining wall project in our back yard. Not cheap. My home is permanently damaged and our contract is still not fulfilled 14 months later. They agreed to settle and we haven't seen a dime. See you in court. -- Take a look at their work: [*** Link removed ***] They do not pay their sub contractors. Lawsuits incoming. They have a podcast and talk about being experts. -- [*** Link removed ***] They brag about how much money they make. They let sub contractors complete work and then never pay them! I would be seriously concerned if you are another company that does business with these people. Your brand will be damaged heavily by association. That interview they ask you for might lose you your customer base. They take your money and run. No communication, no schedules, no respect for your home or money. It is a common belief that excavation is easier or less costly when done in the summer or when the ground is not frozen. Seasons have little effect on when excavation can occur; however, inclement weather can prolong the duration of the job and potentially increase costs. For this reason, those in rainy climates may opt for seasons with milder weather.

Trenches are typically 12 inches to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, your city or county may have specific ordinances that clarify the dimensions needed for the project. For instance, a water pipe may need to be 24 inches deep, but a drainage pipe may need to be 36 inches deep.

If you’re planning to dig on your property, you’ll need to check for underground utility lines. Call the national call-before-you-dig 811 number. Once connected to an operator, you can schedule a site visit to mark underground lines. This way, you won’t accidentally dig into pipes and can cause major (read: costly) issues.

Silt fences should be trenched 8 to 12 inches deep to prevent sediment-filled water from escaping underneath. It also helps to anchor the fence during wet, windy weather. The silt fence fabric often has a red line to indicate the depth for digging. A good contractor will be familiar with the guidelines and regulations.

There are many ways to cut through roots when digging, especially if your trencher doesn’t seem to be removing the roots. First, use a shovel to expose the roots. Then, use gardening shears to clear out smaller roots or a reciprocating saw to remove larger plant roots. If you plan on keeping the plant, avoid cutting any roots over 2 inches thick.
