"I am updating my rating for CA Electrical (Unfortunately Angi will not allow me to edit, so I am posting this as a new review). After posting my original review I was contacted by CA Electrical. The supervisor assured me that my experience was not their normal practice and that they normally made sure to call if there was a change of plans. I felt that they were earnest in trying to make things right, so I agreed to give them another chance. I ultimately decided to select them for my project to replace sub panel and install outlets. The crew was excellent and professional. They showed up on time, were professional and friendly, took extra care to ensure work spaces were left clean. Their workmanship was excellent and they did a great job of cleaning up some messy electrical wiring that had been there before. As an electrical engineer, I also appreciated the crews knowledge of code and ability to explain the technical side of the installation. I would use them again."

"We highly recommend Mendez Electric for any electrical and/or general construction work you need done on your home. We hired Mendez Electric, a multi-generational family business, in 2024 at the recommendation of a neighbor who had used them to completely rewire their 100-year-old home in Berkeley's Elmwood neighborhood. Mendez Electric did a full inspection and report of our electric system, which still included a lot of knob and tube. We ultimately hired Mendez Electric to undertake a major electrical project (six figure project) for our older home which included: 1) a complete system/wiring upgrade and installation of a 300 amp service panel upgrade. This work included all relevant permitting and coordination with PGE. Mendez Electric’s staff are highly knowledgeable, efficient, communicative, competitively priced and focused on high customer service. We have hired Mendez Electric in subsequent months to handle several smaller general construction projects, e.g., cement/sidewal"

"Ray was instrumental in upgrading the electrical in my townhome, including installing new recessed lights, light fixtures, replacing receptacles with new ones and modern cover plates. He also relocated and installed a new subpanel providing dedicated circuits to appliances and the newly installed recessed lights. Ray is incredibly knowledgeable and very easy to work with and I would recommend him and happily use his services again."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

When reviewing quotes in Alameda, watch for missing written estimates, vague details about electrical safety, or a lack of mention of permit requirements. Be cautious if a professional suggests unnecessary panel upgrades or requests large upfront payments. Unusually low quotes and limited knowledge of local home wiring codes or historic district rules are also warning signs to consider when selecting an electrician.

Helpful?

Homes in Alameda with outdated fuse boxes, two-prong outlets, or knob-and-tube wiring often need electrical upgrades for safety. Properties built before the 1950s may require full rewiring, while those from later decades might need panel upgrades or aluminum wiring updates. Waterfront homes benefit from corrosion-resistant electrical supplies, and solar installations often require modernized panels for optimal performance.

Helpful?

Begin by researching permit requirements and factoring in local inspection timelines for electrical projects in Alameda. Coordinate with utility providers for service changes and choose professionals with strong local references and clear written quotes. Plan for temporary power needs, especially in older homes, and allow extra time for historic district reviews. Setting aside a contingency fund helps manage unexpected home wiring issues.

Helpful?

For electrical projects in Alameda, keep a non-contact voltage tester, digital multimeter, and insulated wire strippers for electrical safety. Electrical pliers and a circuit breaker finder help with home wiring tasks. Stock up on corrosion-resistant connectors, earthquake-safe fasteners, GFCI outlets, and flexible conduit to address local climate and seismic needs. These essentials support safe and efficient electrical maintenance in Alameda homes.

Helpful?

In Alameda, kitchens and bathrooms frequently need GFCI outlets and updated circuits for electrical safety. Garages and basements often require new lighting or electric vehicle charging station wiring. Outdoor areas benefit from weather-resistant outlets due to the Bay Area climate. Electrical panels in older homes, especially those with outdated components, should be inspected regularly, and historic homes may need phased wiring improvements.
