As such, there is no difference between Formica® versus laminate other than laminate is the generic name for layers of paper topped with an image layer that have been compressed under high pressure to form a solid, easy-to-maintain countertop. Other companies that produce laminate countertops include WilsonArt® and Arborite®, among others.

Formica® countertops last an average of 10 to 15 years. Top-quality materials that are well looked after and in a low-traffic kitchen could look good for 20 to 30 years or more—but you may want to replace them to modernize your space before they start to look shabby. Avoiding harsh cleaners and using chopping boards can help keep your Formica® countertops looking good for longer.

To prevent Formica from chipping when cutting, use a sharp blade appropriate for the laminate surface. It also helps to score a line first. Another tip is to add masking over the line you plan to cut and ensure you are cutting the Formica face down.

If your countertop is a landscape of nicks, scratches, gouges, and discoloration, you may wonder if you can repair them. Often, you can fill in any nicks or gouges using laminate refinishing kits or epoxy fillers. You can remove some stains and discoloration by gently scrubbing them with a paste made from baking soda and water and a toothbrush.

If you find that the laminate boards are chipping as you cut, you can try flipping the board upside down and cutting the backside first. You can also make a small cut to the top of the board before flipping it and cutting it from the backside. If these strategies do not work, you can place painter’s tape along the edge of the cut to prevent chipping. It is also possible that the saw blade is dull and needs to be replaced.
