Some signs that your main sewer line is clogged are easy to spot, like when water backs up into your showers, sinks, and toilets for no apparent reason. However, some indicators are more subtle.
The most common signs that you may have a clogged sewer main include:
Gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilet
Water in your basement drain or in the lawn
Smell of raw sewage throughout your home

To unclog a plumbing vent, you first need to locate it. Look at your home's roofline. The plumbing vent will be a vertical pipe sticking straight up from the roof. Since this pipe runs all the way to the main drain underneath your house, you should also be able to find it in the attic.
Usually it’s fine to leave a toilet clogged overnight, as long as it’s not close to overflowing. In some cases, the extra time may give the clog time to work itself out. For example, if it’s caused by an excess of toilet paper, letting it sit could result in the clog dissolving and you may be able to simply flush it away by the time you wake up.
Only let it sit though if you have more than one toilet in the home.
Unlike regular cleanings, snaking your sewer line should be done as needed. There’s no reason to snake your sewer line if you don’t have any noticeable issues, like slow drainage or plugged drains. You can add it to your regular sewer cleaning checklist as a prevention method (on the same 18- to 22-month schedule), but it’s not always necessary.
If your drain line is clogged, your AC might stop cooling, shut down, or refuse to turn on at all. Otherwise, you might see your AC leaking water, find standing water or water damage near the unit, or notice a musty smell coming out of your air conditioner or vents.
