"Two young men, Christian and Tim, came to my house because of water backing up in my dishwasher. They checked it out and got it cleaned out (My dishwasher is 16 years old) and in the process found a problem that couldn't be fixed. Nonetheless, their workmanship was great and they made several suggestions that helped. They were very professional and polite and I appreciate the time they spent working with me. I highly recommend them and Plumbing by Jake."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Even if the shower drain doesn’t seem clogged or dirty, plan to clean it out about once per month—or more frequently if you or your family shed a lot of hair. It’s a good practice to remove any hair from the drain on a daily basis, as hair can accumulate fast and cause clogs in no time. You may also want to have a plumber thoroughly clean the drains in your home once every six months.

Some homeowners use additives every month to help septic system performance, but according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the effectiveness of septic system and leach field additives is unknown. Further, additives made with organic solvents or alkali chemicals can actually be harmful to the necessary bacteria in a septic system.

Regardless of the drain cleaner type you choose to use, they all work through chemical reactions that create heat. Thanks to the heat, the clogged hair begins to dissolve until it is able to be flushed away. To avoid clogs in your drain due to hair, use hair catchers and empty them out after every shower.

Yes, continuing to flush a clogged toilet is not likely to break up the clog. Instead, it will continue to put pressure on the clog while filling the bowl with more water, which can potentially cause the toilet to overflow—leading to an even bigger mess. Rather than repeatedly flushing, use a toilet plunger or plumber’s snake to dislodge the clog.

Yes, you can use hydrogen peroxide to unclog a drain. Instead of using a baking soda and vinegar solution, you can use baking soda with hydrogen peroxide. The process to unclog a drain is the same as with vinegar, but use 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide instead.
