Customers say: Quick response

"I was looking for a reputable roofing company after receiving hail and wind damage to my roof. The Roof Commander came with high recommendations. I was very pleased with how Dustin responded so quickly and took time to explain to everything that was going on with my roof. He even made himself available to assist me with the process of making my insurance claim and met with the insurance claim adjuster. This took a lot of stress off of me being a new homeowner, and I am grateful. You can not go wrong choosing Dustin and his team with The Roof Commander. They were timely, neat, considerate, and friendly! Excellent Work! My roof looks great! Thanks a Bunch, Valerie."

"It's a pretty decent system, I think. They send you the pieces and you install them yourself, which is pretty easy. The only real problem I have is that one sensor is too far away from the panel...or there's some interference, and they haven't been able to fix that. It's an interior door, so it's not the end of the world, just a little annoying. Their customer service is pretty good though. Nice, smart customer service people on the other end, very polite and helpful."

"AirTecs Environmental serviced my home yesterday. In 6-8 hours, Mr. Burks and his crew, analyzed my mold testing results, searched and found additional problems and took care of it all. With each discovery, he emailed pictures and provided recommendations for repair. No surprises, and we stayed well within the submitted proposal. I am home and we couldn’t be more pleased. I highly recommend!"

"I probably have more construction experience than most customers.  In a military career, I worked a spectrum of jobs from carpentry and surveying, to construction management and inspection.  I managed an engineering lab for testing of concrete and asphalt.  In civilian life, I directed a hospital maintenance staff, and taught a high school shop class.  In other words, I?ve been around construction-- and contractors for a long time.  So here?s some contract advice.

Understand contractors do business two ways; ?Cost Plus,? or ?Fixed Contract.?  You can do a Google research and get a full understanding of both.  Here?s my advice in Reader?s Digest terms:

A Fixed contractor provides a ?quote?, or ?bid,? and performs all the work promised for the agreed cost. (Get a signed agreement).  A ?quote? is an attractive selling point.  However, when an ?unforeseen condition? arises, the contractor must then either ?eat? the problem-- or expect you to adjust/renegotiate.   Government contract work is like this.

In these fixed contracts, profit is made by the contractor limiting his material cost, and working as fast as possible.  Keep in mind there is the potential that quality will suffer due to ?corners being cut. ?

Cost-plus is almost opposite.  You pay for materials, labor hours, and some percent of profit.  A cost-plus contractor?s estimate is not a really a bid--so realize that the amount may sound attractively low.  Unforeseen conditions are going to raise cost; count on it.  Also, if your contractor turns out to be slow and/or inexperienced-- you will pay too much for the labor hours involved?and potentially, get skimpy quality anyway.

Freewalt Builders were not slow.  Nor did they cut corners.  They brought experience.  They worked like a band of beavers, and took pride in building?what I consider to be a ?brick outhouse? of a deck extension, deck staircase and a 500 S.F. rough-in basement.

Yes, the job cost more than that the estimate.   But I?m not complaining.  I could have halted work at any point and had a potentially lesser crew come in.  I didn?t, because I recognized that the best possible quality work was already being done.

Not only was his own work attended to expertly?Freewalt Builders fixed wrongs things about the existing house--at little cost.  After all was said and done, our cost was exactly where my experience told me it should be.

Finally, I?m very happy with not only the cost-to-value result of the job, but also very happy with the genuine concern and effort by Art Freewalt and his workers--helping me both to visualize, and make real the little renovation dream me and my wife had.  Got a job? Talk to Art Freewalt first.

"Jackie called and asked if they could come out sooner than in the afternoon.  Of course I said yes and she and her sons were here within half an hour.  We talked for a few minutes about the needed cleaning and they got right to work..  They power cleaned the gutters, cleaned the roof of twigs and leaves, and sprayed off the walk ways and the front porch.  I am very pleased with their work.  In fact I have made an appointment for them to come out late November. Great Job!!

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

You can tell if you have ridge vents by looking at the roof’s peak from outside. A ridge vent will look like a speed bump or slight rise away from the roof’s surface and will likely be covered in the same material as the rest of the roof. You can also tell from inside your attic—look up at the roof ridge to see if there is light coming through along the length of the ridge.

Generally, snow guards are not required by building codes unless a local municipality has included them in their code. Even though they are not usually required, snow guards are highly recommended, especially for metal roofs in areas that see significant snowfall throughout the year. They act as a barrier to large loads of snow that can slide off a roof, potentially injuring people and damaging property.

You can check your building’s interior for evidence of leaks and signs your flat roof needs to be replaced, but the best way to identify issues is to have a roof inspection done once a year. This can uncover small damages before they cause major water damage and lead to the need for roof replacement. Visual damages and tears are also signs you need to replace your flat roof.

The most common slope range for roofs on houses in snowy areas is between 4/12 and 6/12, or 50%. A roof with a slope of less than 10%, or roughly a 2/12 pitch, won’t be effective at shedding snow. However, roofs that are too steep can allow large amounts of snow to build up and fall all at once, creating a hazard for those on the ground.

Slate roof repairs involve risks like slipping while working on heights, needing expertise, and correct methods to avoid further damage to materials.
