"The Sales Rep for Custom Stone made immediate contact with me. Instead of doing a complete remodel I decided to do an upgrade by installing Granite in my kitchen and bath. Even though it was quite a bit less $'s spent, both the Owner and Sales Rep treated me as if I was their only customer. After choosing a stone, the installers were excellent. While no countertop material is truly “heatproof,” granite countertops are extremely resistant to high temperatures. Some types of granite can withstand temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. However, we don’t recommend placing hot pots and pans directly on granite countertops. Even if it doesn’t scar the granite, it may damage the sealant.

Overall, granite tends to cost more than marble. Prices for each material will fluctuate depending on the source of the stone, your location, shipping costs, and the thickness of the material. Labor to install marble or granite countertops typically ranges from $35 to $45 per hour. Granite and marble tile and slab costs compare as follows:

  • Marble tile: $7–$10

  • Granite tile: $5–$15

  • Marble slab: $25–$60

  • Granite slab: $50–$100

It is not recommended to put a hot pan directly on a marble countertop. While marble is heat-resistant, it is not completely heat-proof, and extreme or prolonged exposure to high heat can cause discoloration, cracking, or chipping. Pans may also scratch or nick the surface. To protect your countertop and maintain its integrity, always use trivets or hot pads. Note that faux marble finishes do not resist heat and require protection from hot items at all times.

Marble is very porous, so it stains more than non-porous quartz. Exercise caution when drinking wine and juice or cooking with oil near the marble fixture.

Sintered stone and quartz are both low-maintenance materials resistant to water damage and scratching.
