You can have an automatic pool cover with a saltwater pool, but it’s important to know that the small levels of salt in your pool can eventually corrode the metal parts of the pool cover. If you put too much baking soda in your pool, your alkalinity will rise. That means you’ll need to take steps to lower your alkalinity. A good rule of thumb is to add one or two 40-pound bags of salt for every inch of rain, but you’ll want to test your salt levels first to ensure you’re adding the right amount. Rainwater can dilute the salt levels in your pool, so after significant rainfall, test the levels and add the appropriate amount of salt to bring it back to the ideal level.

When there’s too much chlorine in your pool, you might experience symptoms like nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Excessive chlorine can also give you a skin rash and irritate your eyes, throat, and nose. If your pool’s chlorine level is too high, turn off your chlorinator or chlorine feeder (if you have one). You can also remove the cover and let sunlight hit the water, which naturally reduces chlorine levels.
