"We are doing a major renovation in a 120-year-old home. When working with a home of this age it is guaranteed that you will uncover some surprises when working on it. When we discovered we had the lead in our walls and ceilings we had a few consultations and quotes from other companies that left us overwhelmed and defeated. Things turned around when we finally found A1A. Sean, David, and the crew are fair, kind, and extremely helpful. It helps that they value old homes and work with you to find the best option with both safety and preservation in mind. We had to have the crew out three times to complete work because each round of demo kept uncovering new findings, but Sean and David never once tried to take advantage of us. David or Sean would come on-site each time to guide us through our options and test any additional surfaces that were uncovered. They worked quickly as well which helps when we are moved out and on a timeline for our renovation project. I cannot recommend them enough for any of your mold, lead, or asbestos needs."

"The owner is extremely professional and conscientious when setting up and executing remediation so that spores do not spread from the containment area. The company was here when they said they would be and worked to resolve our issue as quickly as possible. They were also incredibly nice people that took care in my home. I highly recommend!"

"Went very well. He’s very knowledgeable of the work. He explained what was going to be done and time frame of how long the process would take but was able to get it done sooner than he expected. Everything turned out great."

Lead Testing and Removal questions, answered by experts

Determining if your water main contains lead involves a few steps. First, check the age of your property, as homes built before the 1980s might have lead pipes. Contact your water utility company for information on your service line material. Then, you can hire a professional plumber to conduct an inspection or use a lead testing kit to analyze water from the main line.

At-home lead tests can provide accurate results if used correctly, and if the kits are reputable and certified. They vary in sensitivity and methodology, influencing their accuracy. Follow instructions meticulously, ensuring proper sample collection and test execution. While they can detect elevated lead levels, for precise confirmation or if results are concerning, consider professional testing or lab analysis for comprehensive accuracy and guidance on addressing any issues.

Professional testing for lead paint costs about $300, ranging from about $250 to $700, depending on the square footage, accessibility, and location. However, testing for lead paint with a DIY home-testing kit costs about $25, but doesn’t guarantee accurate results. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends using a lead test kit that complies with the Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule, which has strict criteria for ensuring a more accurate reading.

Common home surfaces to test for lead include:

  • Walls

  • Windows

  • Doors

  • Molding and trim

  • Railings

Properties should be tested for lead every 2-3 years, especially if they are older, have undergone renovations, or show deterioration of paint or interior finishes.

If your home was built before 1978, there’s a chance that any paint on your hardwood floors could be lead paint—especially if it was already there when you moved in. Because lead is toxic, hiring a licensed pro to remove it is mandatory. The average price for professional lead paint removal ranges from $1,500 to $5,300 and depends on the scope of the project.
