"We are doing a major renovation in a 120-year-old home. When working with a home of this age it is guaranteed that you will uncover some surprises when working on it. When we discovered we had the lead in our walls and ceilings we had a few consultations and quotes from other companies that left us overwhelmed and defeated. Things turned around when we finally found A1A. Sean, David, and the crew are fair, kind, and extremely helpful. It helps that they value old homes and work with you to find the best option with both safety and preservation in mind. We had to have the crew out three times to complete work because each round of demo kept uncovering new findings, but Sean and David never once tried to take advantage of us. David or Sean would come on-site each time to guide us through our options and test any additional surfaces that were uncovered. They worked quickly as well which helps when we are moved out and on a timeline for our renovation project. I cannot recommend them enough for any of your mold, lead, or asbestos needs."

"The owner is extremely professional and conscientious when setting up and executing remediation so that spores do not spread from the containment area. The company was here when they said they would be and worked to resolve our issue as quickly as possible. They were also incredibly nice people that took care in my home. I highly recommend!"

Lead Testing and Removal questions, answered by experts

Completing lead testing and removal directly eliminates hidden health hazards in older Birmingham homes. Replacing deteriorating painted surfaces, windows, and doors during abatement also seals out drafts and stops moisture intrusion. This process significantly improves your indoor air quality and lowers dust accumulation. For families in AL, removing this risk provides essential peace of mind and makes your historic home a much safer, more comfortable environment.

Helpful?

You must never sand, scrape, or dry-sweep deteriorating paint in an older Birmingham home, as this spreads toxic dust. Before a professional arrives for lead testing and removal, restrict access to the affected rooms entirely. Keep children and pregnant women away from the area. Wipe hard surfaces with a damp cloth to capture dust, and cover peeling paint with heavy-duty tape and plastic sheeting to prevent further flaking.

Helpful?

Start your spring routine by inspecting window sills and exterior surfaces for peeling caused by winter moisture. During the summer, check exterior paint after heavy Birmingham rainstorms. In the fall, evaluate friction points like doors before turning on your heating system. Throughout the winter, wipe down high-traffic floors to remove tracked-in soil, and inspect areas near radiators where heat causes paint to crack, preparing you for lead testing and removal.

Helpful?

Spring brings a surge in demand for lead testing and removal due to the active Birmingham real estate market. Fall provides the optimal weather for exterior abatement, as the cooler, drier AL climate ensures proper paint adhesion. You should avoid scheduling interior work during peak summer heat, as high humidity interferes with encapsulant materials. Winter offers shorter wait times for professional assessments since demand drops significantly.

Helpful?

A professional inspection takes two to four hours, with lab results returning in three to seven days. Targeted surface stabilization requires one to three days. Full whole-house lead testing and removal in an older AL home takes one to three weeks. You must also account for a mandatory post-abatement clearance examination, which adds two days. Anticipate a two- to four-week wait to schedule a certified Birmingham contractor.
