"Hunter reviewed our plans and made some additional recommendations. We still owned the process and he did his best to create our vision out of hardscape material. He was prompt to come out and gave a very detailed estimate, breaking down materials and service. There was no doubt what was included in the quote. There were other firms that quoted the project at a lower price that did not get the job because their quote was too ambiguous. When it came to the installation, they were prompt, detailed and clean. Within three days they were complete. At the end of each workday the cleaned up and left the site presentable. We received great value and great service. We are delighted with HDR Landscaping’s work and highly recommend them"

"Awesome experience. Super professional and easy to work with and quick to respond. He cleaned out the back yard of 30 years worth of debris. He ensured the yard was cleaned up as well. Reasonably priced and well worth the money. I would recommend to anyone who needed his service."

"Jimmy, Josh and their crews took a jungle of a back yard and made it beautiful. The designed and did the entire project. We have received dozens of compliments from our neighbors as well as the City Inspectors. The built the retaining wall and waterfall, did the grading and installed the complete drainage and irrigation systems. Their price was very fair and concrete began the project they stayed on the job until they finished. I would give them six stars if I could. Highly recommend them for all landscape related projects. "Clint was great! Super easy to work with. He replaced a large portion of my privacy fence (2 sides) that a tree had fallen through. He showed up on time, always checked in to let me know what time he’d be here, cleaned everything up when he was finished, and most importantly, he paid attention to detail and did amazing work. He also built a deck gate for my stairs. Everything looks wonderful!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Buying plants from a nursery is one thing, but ensuring that they are properly planted is another. While you might not need to hire a landscaper for every plant that you buy from a nursery, it’s a great idea to have their expertise and experience to plant larger items, like burlapped trees or specialty plants like rose bushes. Even better, before making a trip to a nursery to buy new plants, consult a local landscaper to test your soil for pH levels, soil texture, and phosphorus and potassium levels to help determine the best plants for your area.

It is possible to DIY complete hardscaping projects, but in most cases, hiring a professional is best to get the job done correctly. Hardscaping—including installing patios, decks, retaining walls, walkways, and water features—is challenging and time-consuming, so the money you spend on a professional is typically worth it. Not only will the quality be better, but you could avoid problems that come along with a lack of hardscaping experience, like drainage issues that can lead to costly foundation damage and leaks in your home.

Since the nature of the landscaping project can heavily influence the overall cost, it helps to understand what different types of landscaping projects cost on average. For example:

  • Plant a tree: $100–$2,000

  • Build a retaining wall: $3,250–$9,200

  • Reseed a lawn: $450–$1,700

  • Install a water fountain: $950–$4,800

  • Install a paver patio: $2,400–$7,000

  • Install a concrete walkway: $1,200–$2,400

  • Install a flower bed: $800–$3,000

  • Landscape lighting: $2,000–$6,000

DIY home gardening can be relaxing, joyful, and cost-effective. From mowing your lawn to planting your own flower beds, there is a wide variety of gardening tasks that you can do yourself to make your yard look beautiful. If you’d rather spend your time not in the dirt, or if you’d like someone to take care of your plants for you, calling a professional gardening service is best. They can give you a workup of what services you’ll need and how often to schedule them.

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.
