"We wanted a complete re-wire of our 1961 home. The wiring was non-standard, and in desperate need of upgrade. We called several local vendors in the area, and Mr Electric gave us the best quote. They were very thorough in their pre-sale inspection of our home. The electrician was up front with what he found, and what we needed to get up to code. He (Thomas) also told us that if we wanted to replace fixtures, now was the time, as they would have to be pulled anyway. He also explained that they would minimize interruptions to us, by planning and executing their work in stages, basically room-by-room, in a logical fashion. In addition, we decided to add a transfer switch to run the house on generator during power outages. Thomas integrated that into the install, making sure that key circuits would be powered in an emergency. Overall, I am more than pleased with the service and work from Mr Electric. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"

"Lance Parker and his team did an excellent job. Lance contacted us the same day we entered the request and came to provide estimate on the date/time we agreed. We had some extenuating circumstances with a sick family member and Lance and his team did everything they could to maintain power in their room with a generator while they worked to remove a power pole and update the home’s power with a new box and physically move the power from a pole to attaching to the home. He coordinated with the power company and inspectors. He also repaired a power issue to the oven inside the home. Evidently it had always been on the incorrect switch. He troubleshot and determined it needed to move from a 40 to 50 switch. Everything looks great and is working beautifully. Thank you!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

These advanced generators use a key fob or a smartphone app to remotely start, which is ideal for getting power back on immediately without venturing outside. This feature is more common on whole home generators, but you may be able to find it on large portable generators, too.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. While you’ll have to pay between $400 and $2,500 to have the transfer switch installed, you’ll recoup that amount later on when you don’t have to pay for expensive repairs to your appliances, devices, and electrical system that may have burned out, overloaded, or stopped working due to a sudden loss of power or an incorrect hook up of a generator to your home

If your home already has a grinder pump and you’re still noticing issues (like frequently clogged toilets and sinks), it could be time to upgrade your grinder pump. Start by checking your existing horsepower. If there are four or fewer people living in your home, using a 1/2-horsepower grinder pump should be sufficient. Larger households should consider investing in a 1-horsepower grinder pump to maximize wastewater removal efforts.
