"Robert Frier and his team did a very good job on our driveway. They applied a thick coating down the sides of the asphalt to seal the edges. They brushed in edges next to the street, sidewalk, and carport. And Robert applied a thick coat of asphalt sealer using his very effective spraying machine. The driveway looks very good and ready for winter weather. Thank you Robert and the work crew for a top notch job."

"Cory is extremely professional and communicative. We had him design and install plants and bushes, including mulch. And paved a patio for us, including putting in a retaining wall. I was very impressed with the work he did, and it was affordable!"

"The very best contractor I have ever worked with. He and his company came to repair a large pothole in my asphalt driveway. He also repaired another that had been repaired before but sunk in. His price was very reasonable. Very personable, worked hard. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this company. They did an excellent job. I have had other asphalt contractors ever since I put in this asphalt driveway. None have ever done the great job this company did. I will call them every time I need something done to this driveway. Can't rave about them enough. And NO I am not related. Found them on Angi and could not be more happy. GREAT JOB!!!"

"Mr. King is the consummate gentleman. His knowledge of concrete driveways, and related issues, is complete. He performed everything I wanted him to do, and several related projects that I didn't know that he could perform. When he finished my job, I was completely satisfied. If I need anymore driveways in the future, I will just call him first, and forget the bid process. Having been in the Healthcare construction field for the last 25 years, I just thought I knew all about driveways. Now I do. I didn't know, what I didn't know."

"Joe came to our house and did some excavating due to a build up of trees, rock and stumps. Before this work was done; We could not tell how big our backyard was. After the work was done; We could see the entire 1/2 acre backyard. Our grandkids love it!!!!! You will not be disappointed."

Asphalt Driveways FAQs, answered by experts

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Driveway aprons typically range between four and seven inches thick, though your town's building codes will likely have specific requirements. Additionally, you may need to add a layer of permeable aggregate in the excavation below your paved apron to ensure proper stormwater drainage.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.
