"Jeremy was great! I had been told by a different plumber that my heat exchanger was fried and corroded and it was going to cost $3200 to repair. I didn't hire that guy. Jeremy Lawson came out and checked out my water heater. He said it didn't look like it had ever been used. It wasn't hooked up correctly. He took the time to track down the water lines and hook them up correctly. Replaced a breaker that was the wrong amp. with the correct one. I recommend him highly and he will be my plumber for all my future plumbing needs!"

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Clean regularly with non-abrasive cleaners, avoid pouring grease down the drain, and check for leaks under the sink.

Some experts estimate that descaling your cast iron pipes can extend their lifetime by upwards of 50 years, although there’s not a lot of research to prove it. But we do know that without proper maintenance, cast iron pipes can quickly rust—leading to more expensive issues like burst pipes or main line clogs.

In the majority of cases, homeowners insurance will not cover a main sewer line root clog. The reason is that most insurance companies consider tree root damage to sewer lines as common wear and tear, which is also preventable. However, you may be able to buy optional add-on coverage, such as "service line coverage" or "sewer line endorsements," that would protect against root damage to your sewer line.

Pouring drain cleaner down a vent pipe isn’t recommended. First of all, unlike a clog in a sink or bath caused by such material as soap scum build-up, toothpaste, and hair, clogs in a vent pipe are likely the result of debris from trees or even an animal stuck in the pipe. Drain cleaners won’t be able to eat through this kind of material. The cleaner will only become clogged in the vent with the debris, causing even more problems.

In some cases, operating a snake can damage your drain and pipes. This depends on the overall condition of your pipes and how gently you operate the auger. For instance, older galvanized pipes covered in zinc are susceptible to scratches when using a drain snake. Additionally, it’s common for newbies to apply too much force when extending the snake, leading to scratches and related damage. You can also crack the porcelain with an electric auger if you’re snaking a toilet drain. If you’re using a manual snake or auger, the risk is minimal.
