Most recycled glass countertops are nonporous, so they don’t require sealant. There is, however, one major exception. If your recycled glass countertop contains a cement binder, it’ll require an additional layer of protection. Seal these countertops once or twice a year. Use a concrete sealant and finish it with a food-safe wax for a gorgeous and shiny finish. Otherwise, just clean the countertop regularly and always use a cutting board.

Use this grading system when selecting marble for countertops:

You’ll want to finish butcher block countertops with a food-safe sealant. Mineral oil and tung oil are great options for a velvety, matte finish. They’re water resistant, but you’ll need to reapply them regularly. Some homeowners also use polyurethane, but this option shows scratches much more prominently—which isn’t great for people who use their countertops as a cutting board.
While porcelain countertops are durable and don’t chip easily once installed, they aren’t chip-proof. If they’re subject to blunt force, chips, cracks, or other damage can occur. Unless you’re very confident in your installation abilities, hiring a local countertop installation company will reduce the risk of damage.
Butcher block countertops last around 20 years, and even longer in some cases. This largely depends on how often you complete general maintenance tasks, like sanding and resurfacing to remove scorch marks, dings, scratches and other imperfections. You should clean butcher block countertops after every use to make sure they last. Also, the thickness of the specific strips used to build the butcher block impacts longevity. Generally speaking, thicker strips are more durable than thinner strips.
