"Cody came out within an hour of my Angi post, taught me the terminology I needed to better understand my AC problem, giving me the needed ammo to convince my hubby we did not need a $6000 repair or a $18,000 brand new system install (but instead, only a $500 to $700 new pump and tune up). Cody continued to be available by text and phone for my additional questions, and was an absolute gentleman when I told him that my hubby had booked a Friday repair instead of the Monday date I scheduled with him. I will definitely use him in the future and strongly encourage others to HIRE THIS GUY. He is knowledgeable, but able to explain things simply, with pics of previous work, friendly, down to earth, and quotes only the job you really need, at a very affordable price, instead of trying to convince you to pour money into an unneeded service. You absolutely can trust he will do only what you need, and not gouge you for something you don't."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, a dirty evaporator coil can freeze up. Dirty evaporator coils can’t absorb or transfer heat properly. The dirt and grime restrict airflow, which is needed to move heat throughout the system properly. Your air conditioning unit could freeze over, or it can cause your heat pump to freeze.

If you’re planning an AC replacement, choosing an AC with a higher SEER rating may save you money in the long run. Tax credits could cover as much as 30% of the job, and you’ll notice smaller utility bills (particularly if you live in a hot climate where you need to constantly run the AC). Generally, you can expect to pay between $350 and $1,500 for each SEER rating increase. Weigh the cost against your typical utility bill to figure out what’s worth it to you.

Some of the signs of HVAC issues include rising energy bills, rooms not cooling or heating properly, loud noises when in operation, and signs of condensation. To illustrate, if you’re wondering how to stop condensation on air vents, you’ll need to have your HVAC inspected.

During the summer, it’s best to set your AC to 78 degrees when you’re home and awake, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). For better energy efficiency, raise the temperature slightly to 85 degrees while you’re out of the house. The National Sleep Foundation advises lowering your thermostat to between 60 and 67 degrees when you’re asleep.

A dual evaporator coil is a specific design that allows the AC system to cool different compartments at different levels. It’s usually seen in refrigerators and similar appliances, but not in whole-house air conditioning systems. Talk with your AC technician about the best uses for a dual evaporator coil.
