There are a few things worth buying to make this entire process as simple as possible. However, you likely already have the most important item: the instruction manual. This manual offers useful nuggets of wisdom regarding cleaning, use, and maintenance. If you don't have a paper copy, check the manufacturer's website for a digital version. Here's everything else you need:

  • Dishwasher cleaning solution

  • Microfiber cloth

  • Vinegar or another anti-fungal

  • Baking soda

  • Replacement filter

  • Water softener

  • Descaler

  • Toothpicks

General Maintenance

Complete these simple yet crucial maintenance steps regularly:

  • Run the dishwasher at least once a week, as this keeps the motor seals working properly

  • Check the clean dishes for spots, which could indicate hard water

  • Install a water softener if you live in an area prone to hard water

  • Check the filter regularly for dirt and debris

  • Clean the filter as necessary

  • Consult the instruction manual for other maintenance tasks specific to your dishwasher model

Monthly

Clean your dishwasher every month to ensure a long lifespan, and follow these tips:

  • Check and clean the filter

  • Run a wash cycle with a bowl of vinegar to eliminate mold

  • Run a cycle with dishwasher cleaner

  • Sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of the unit and run a short, hot cycle

  • Use a descaler, especially if you suspect hard water

  • Wipe down the exterior with mild detergent and a damp cloth

  • Pay special attention to the seals, removing all grime

  • Remove the racks and clean them with a damp cloth and detergent

  • Make sure the racks are aligned properly when reinstalled

  • Wipe down the spray arm with a damp cloth

Yearly

Finally, consider these additional yearly tasks:

  • Remove and clean the spray arm

  • Clear away blockages with a toothpick

  • Check the filter for holes

  • Replace the filter as necessary

  • Hire a local dishwasher repair pro for an annual inspection

  • Hire a service pro to conduct any repairs indicated by the inspection

  • Replace the model if the pro says it’s time
