1. Get rid of stuff

Simplify, declutter and see your rooms anew. If you have something you don’t like get rid of it now!

2. Add some subtle furniture

To modernize a traditional room, all you need is a new metal-and-wood end table or coffee table. Try adding a glass lamp or a contemporary chair. You don’t have to change the whole room — subtle changes make a difference.

3. Swap out accent pillows

Change out those old pillows! Use multiple colors, textures, sizes and patterns to mix them up on your sofa and chairs. Add a colorful throw to a sofa or chair, and change out those worn old lampshades. Quick and easy fixes!

4. Modernize lights

For your chandeliers, you can create a more modern look by using clear round bulbs instead of the traditional candle style.

5. Upgrade cabinet hardware

Invest in new hardware to update your kitchen and bathroom cabinets. It doesn’t take long and will look like you have all new cabinets.

6. Reflect on your new style

Add a mirror or a grouping of mirrors to any wall to create visual interest. Look for a starburst-shaped mirror, one with crystals, metal swirls or floral shapes, depending on the space.

7. Add a pop of visual interest

Fill an apothecary jar with colorful candies, fruit, shells, decorative balls or beads. This instantly invites people into the room and also adds a pop of color with visual interest.

8. Frame a print

Frame it — but not just your family photos. Print out a copy of your favorite painting and frame it. Put it on your desk, and it will brighten up your space and mood every time you see it.

9. Dress up your end tables

Tired of your wood end tables? Try a fun and fancy marble top to dress them up, and hide years of water marks and scratches.

10. Reupholster dining chairs

Your dining room or kitchen chairs looking nasty? With a minimal amount of fabric you can recover chairs in no time, giving a new look and feel to your interior design.
