With time and traffic, the blades that make up artificial grass can flatten and become matted. One way to counteract this is to brush or rake the grass when the blades begin to flatten to keep them upright and prevent matting.

Artificial grass requires very little maintenance aside from debris removal, periodic rinsing, and raking to restore blades to their original state. One of the biggest appeals of artificial grass is how little maintenance it requires compared to traditional grass lawns.

Artificial grass has a few major advantages over real grass. Mainly, you’ll save on your water bill, spend less effort maintaining your lawn, and have the greenest yard you’ve ever had. Plus, if you have pets, you won’t get that dreaded ring of yellow grass from where your dog likes to do its business.

However, there are some disadvantages to consider when deciding if artificial grass is right for your lawn, such as cost, heat retention during warmer months, and the artificial feel of the turf under your toes.

You can choose to put a foam underlay beneath artificial grass on concrete, particularly if it’s an area where you have play equipment. Foam underlays are generally 10 to 20 millimeters thick and designed specifically for use under turf. Artificial turf can also be installed directly on concrete using a specialized adhesive if it’s an area where hard ground won’t be a danger. 

The best way to clean artificial turf is to use a stiff-bristled broom or rake to loosen up any large debris once a week. The process will also redistribute the infill material that keeps your turf blades standing up straight and evenly. For artificial turf maintenance, do not vacuum your turf or apply cleaning solutions. If you need to rinse the blades, spritz them with a light hose.
