Frederick Block, Brick & Stone, a third-generation family-run business, first started in 1967 selling cinder blocks and mortar. Over the past 45+ years, the product line has expanded to include brick, natural stone, manufactured stone, handscaping products, and so much more. Originally named Frederick Block Co., the change to Frederick Block, Brick & Stone (FBBS) was made in 2002 to better capture the wide variety of products sold. Today, FBBS strives to be innovative and to offer the most relevant masonry products to today’s building industry. FBBS has always taken pride in offering quality products supported by a knowledgeable stales staff that is focused on providing a positive customer experience. These goals continue to be at the heart of our organization. To accommodate changes in the marketplace and to offer a better experience for our customers, a new office building, showroom, warehouse, and outdoor display area were constructed in 2005. In 2012 FBBS opened a second location in Upperville, VA, conveniently located on John S. Mosby Highway. By leveraging our experience and longevity, we have become the leading distributor of masonry and hardscape products for the residential and commercial markets servicing Winchester, Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Fauquier, and Shenandoah counties, as well as the eastern West Virginia markets. Second Location: 9183 John S. Mosby Hwy Upperville, VA 20184 (540)592-3033

Stone and Gravel questions, answered by experts

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.

In certain cases, such as when dealing with surfaces like concrete rather than brick, grout can be used instead of mortar. Grout tends to be more convenient to work with on non-masonry surfaces. However, many experts suggest using mortar whenever possible, as it provides stronger adherence to the bricks and results in a more textured appearance.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Handbuilt masonry fireplaces are likely what comes to mind when we think about curling up by the fire at the end of the day. But bricks in the firebox and chimney tend to be heavy, which is not ideal for homes with weak or damaged foundations.

Prefabricated fireboxes come with a full flue and chimney system, significantly reducing the price and installation time. However, if you need to replace the panels down the line, you are locked into the same model or something very similar.

Yes, it’s usually possible to repair damaged brick mailboxes. If the masonry is damaged, the brick can be cut out and replaced, or the mortar joints can be cut out and retucked. However, the new mortar will likely be different in color from the original mortar joints. In most cases, if the mailbox itself is damaged, it’s possible to cut it out and replace it. Consult a masonry contractor to determine whether it’s worth repairing your brick mailbox based on its value and amount of damage.
